“Focus is the natural enemy of chaos.”

— Rox

The third season of Ninjago: Dragons Rising is the twenty-second installment in the franchise overall and released on April 17, 2025. Zane and Arc Dragon of Focus are the mascots, and Thunderfang is the main antagonist. The Dragonians and the Hollow Ones are the villainous factions.

It is the third season in the United Arc, set in the merged realms after the events of the original series, following the Ninja against the recently released Forbidden Five who plan on awakening the terrible Dragon of Chaos, and continuing Ras's overarching mission to reverse the Merge. The McGuffin of this season is the Prismatic Blades.

It is preceded by the second season.

Notes[]

  • Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated his favorite episode from the season is the 17th episode.
    • He also stated this season was his favorite to write.
  • The season will introduce two new realms.
    • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, these two realms haven't been seen on-screen since the Merge.
  • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, this season is darker than the previous ones.
  • The first teaser has a shot of Thunderfang roaring, but it is flipped horizontally from the original episode.
  • On April 1, 2025, writers Kevin Burke and Chris "Doc" Wyatt each made a two truths and one lie post as a sneak peek at the season on Bluesky.
    • Burke's three statements were:
      • Without Nya, the Gates to Androzani will not open.
      • Mr. Frohicky will be denied personal rewards.
      • Sora barfed on Zane.
        • The first statement is the lie: Mr. Frohicky mentioned he wasn't interested in personal rewards anyway, and it was mentioned that Sora once barfed on Zane.
        • The first statement is a reference to the sixth serial of the 21st season of Doctor Who.
    • Wyatt's three statements were:
      • The Merlopians welcome their new protector.
      • Leaf Blade serves as regent of the Mountain Tribe.
      • Vengestone can be known by another name.
        • The first statement is the lie: Leaf Blade serves as the regent for Eridany until she comes of age, and while the Lightning-Tides are aware of Vengestone, they are unfamiliar with its name and abilities, which leads them to simply refer to them as "Glow Rocks."

Continuity[]

  • More information about the realms, established and unestablished, are revealed in this season.
    • The First Realm is returned to for the first time since the events of March of the Oni, and has since been referred to as the "First Lands" after the Merge.
      • It is revealed in a flashback told by Rox that in the great war between the Oni and the Dragons, a Dragon general named Thunderfang, who grew more powerful with every soul he consumes, was consumed by chaotic power having consumed so many Oni that he sought to become a Source Dragon, believing that his war victories granted him this title. When he was denied he attacked the City of Temples, where the Source Tournament is held, and he was defeated by the Arc Dragon of Focus, who sealed him deep underground in the First Realm, where he has remained imprisoned for thousands of years.
        • It's revealed that a Prismatic Blade was used by Zeatrix in her fight with Lloyd in the Tournament of Sources in the last season, which is one of the five blades that can break him out.
      • A new species known as the Dragonians are introduced as inhabitants of the First Realm. Lloyd and Sora find themselves in the First Lands where they meet the Dragonians for the first time, and deduce that the Dragonians and the Dragons themselves may be the only inhabitants of the realm left.
        • It is currently unknown what happened to the Oni and the First People.
        • The Oni and the infinite war between them and the dragons is mentioned, and the Oni's theme from MotO plays.
    • The Departed Realm (and by extension the Cursed Realm) is returned to for the first time since the events of Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu, and officially acknowledged for the first time since the Merge. They are now known as the "Spectral Lands".
      • It's revealed that since the Cursed Realm ended up inside the Departed Realm, things were messy even before the Merge, but since that happened, both the Cursed and Departed Realms merged into the Spectral Lands, and the inhabitants of both now coexist.
      • It's also revealed that since the Merge, the departed were finally able to "move on". Whether they're sent to another plane of existence, or to be reborn is unknown, but Morro is now one of the only remaining inhabitants. The dead still pass through the Spectral Lands, where they're vulnerable to Soul Suckers, but once they pass through, they move on to eternal rest.
        • Lloyd wondered if Wu has departed, which Cole brings up he has a history with the Departed, and remembers what it's like, referencing the time he was a ghost and when he almost went through the rift in Day of the Departed. It was assumed by the Ninja that Wu had died, but Morro reveals that that can't be true, otherwise he would have seen him pass through the Spectral Lands.
        • The "other plane of existence" mentioned by Morro might be the Grasslands, the place Lloyd met the First Spinjitzu Master in his vision at the end of March of the Oni. Since the Grasslands was confirmed not to be the Departed Realm or anything similar, this seems to make sense and confirm that there is another plane beyond the original 17 realms and the Ethereal Divide.
      • A new inhabitant of the Cursed Realm is introduced known as the Soul Sucker. They are beasts invisible to the living the hunt in packs and like to feast on the souls of the living and the dead.
    • Since the events of Season 1, Djinnjago has grown enormously larger than it once was, growing from the one grain of sand that Arrokore once possessed. Since S1, he has used Wish Magic to restore it after granting people many wishes. It is now as big as a temple floating in the sky.
      • There seems to be an error or a retcon in that Arrokore can choose which wishes he's allowed to grant, and how many per person he can grant, as opposed to Nadakhan. Nadakhan could only grant three wishes at a time, and as long as he was in earshot, he had to grant a wish he's heard. Arrokore is able to grant as many as he wants seemingly and can deny wishes to those who he wants.
      • It's revealed that one half of the Arc Dragon of Focus once slumbered deep beneath the surface of Djinnjago.
    • More information about the Realm of Mysterium is revealed. Ras and his crew visit the town of Abracalabria, which was once part of the Realm of Mysterium, and it is established that this realm uses the calendar year system unlike Ninjago. Their year designations are "AL" (similar to the real world AD, or CE) but it is unknown what it stands for.
      • It's also revealed that one half of the Arc Dragon of Focus was sealed in this realm long ago.
    • The Realm of Lee is introduced formally after being alluded to since Season 1. Lee is a drab land with an artificial town built underground made by a man named Lee, a man who is able to clone himself. Lee lies to his inhabitants and tells them that the other realms were destroyed, and that this is the only place left.
      • Because Lee is basically keeping his inhabitants as prisoner, he creates graves on the surface of everyone who lives in his town to dispel anyone from looking for them. This is what happens when Arin visits here and finds his parents graves, unknowing that they are actually alive below the surface.
      • It's revealed that until the Merge, Lee was the only inhabitant of the realm.
    • The Underworld appears physically for the first time in this season since the Pilot Episodes. It is stated that it was a mystery how to return there, even after the realms merged.
      • While never stated in the actual show before, it is officially established that the difference between the Underworld and the spectral realms are that those who are disgraced in battle end up in the Underworld after death.
      • Awakened Warriors return as inhabitants of the Underworld now. They join Skulkin and Greenbone Warriors as more skeletal inhabitants of the Underworld.
      • Inside the Underworld is a forge where Ras is able to create new Icons of the Source Dragons.
  • This season expands on more of the fate about particular Elemental Masters following the Merge and adds more lore to existing ones.
    • Morro, the former Elemental Master of Wind, officially returns in the show for the first time since Day of the Departed and since his flashback in The Hands of Time. He references the fact that he was once a Ninja, and feels he has a duty to protect those who pass through the Spectral Lands, even if he still feels the pull to "move on" himself. He says that his biggest regret is betraying Master Wu, and since he was taught by him to protect those who cannot protect himself, he has made it his mission to do just that in his honor, and to make up for the sins he made in the past.
    • It's revealed that the Forbidden Five got their powers specifically from Thunderfang. He empowered specifically five of them so they could break the five chains he is bound by.
  • More information about the Source Dragons is revealed in this season.
    • It's revealed that each of the seven Source Dragons has an icon they left behind to summon them, and Ras used the Icon of the Source Dragon of Energy to summon the Source Dragon that Imperium held in captive, unaware of Ras's true goals.
      • Since the events of the previous season, Arin has joined Ras in their efforts to regain his strength and find Arin's parents. Ras reveals to Arin that his parents were killed during the Merge, but his ultimate plan is to reverse the Merge and create life in its wake, reviving his parents and saving Ras's people. In order to reverse the Merge he has to summon all seven Source Dragons with their icons.
      • Ras has been in possession of his hammer, the Icon of the Source Dragon of Strength all this time, and was going to attempt to create new icons by winning the Source Tournament and harnessing the Elemental Power, but that plan failed.
        • Ras uses the Forge of the Forgotten to create another icon.
    • Firstbourne is revealed to be the leader of the Arc Dragons, which are a subgroup of Dragons whose powers are directly related to the Source Dragons.
    • It is revealed that the Source Dragon that was killed was the Source Dragon of Balance. What Cole was shown by Wu's spirit at the end of Season 1 is finally revealed as "something" underground known as the screaming earth. After investigating it, they discover the bones of Source Dragon of Balance, which appeared in the Land of Lost Things somehow after its death.
  • P.I.X.A.L. returns for the first time since Crystalized. Like Zane was, she too was trapped in a mechanical cocoon since the Merge. Apparently it's been years since they saw each other, but P.I.X.A.L. only remembers it as this morning.
  • Dareth returns in this season after last appearing in Crystalized. He still wants to become a real Spinjitzu ninja, having sought out Arrokore to grant his wish, but it's denied.
  • The Explorer's Club is mentioned in the first episode, the first reference to them since the events of Crystalized, and the first notion that they still exist after the Merge.
  • A flashback to when Cole entered the Land of Lost Things shows them finding Clutch Powers's book, "Booby Traps and How to Survive Them."
  • Vengestone returns in this season, after having a major role in Crystalized and having a minor appearance in mini-movies released for DR Season 2. Some of them are being used by Lightning-Tides. Apparently they just "found" it, but where it came from is unknown.
  • Since the events of Season 2, where Jay's goodness was shattered, he has become the Rogue, marauding through the Merged Lands selling rare goods to those who require his services, which include the likes of rare Oni chalices from the First Realm.
  • Ed & Edna's Junkyard is brought up for the first time since the Merge. Kai mentions that Jay used to play a game called Galamorph X-Post all the time on the arcade in the junkyard.
  • Zane references his falcon when he tells his dragon he "used to dance with birds" before he realized it was considered weird.
  • A flashback in episode 8 reveals how Arin and Sora met in the Crossroads, and how they became best friends as kids.
  • The Skulkin duo, Kruncha and Nuckal return for the first time since Tournament of Elements, and for the first time with speaking roles since Legacy of the Green Ninja. At some point between Seasons 4 and Dragons Rising, they were released from Kryuptarium Prison and returned to their home in the Underworld.
    • Garmadon and Samukai are indirectly mentioned by Nuckal when Arin apologizes for Ras being so "intense," saying that they once worked for people like that.
  • Barry, Arin's dad, reveals that his wife was a fan of Jay's game show he hosted before Tournament of Elements. He also references Superstar Rockin' Jay from Prime Empire.
