Five Nights at Freddy's is an American media franchise created by Scott Cawthon. It began with the 2014 video game of the same name and has since gained worldwide popularity. The main video game series consists of ten survival horror games taking place in locations somehow connected to family pizza restaurant Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. In most games, the player takes on the role of a night-time employee, who must utilise tools such as security cameras, lights, doors, and vents to defend themselves against hostile animatronic characters that inhabit the locations. The series' canon is revealed through voice recordings, minigames, and easter eggs.

Five Nights at Freddy's

Five Nights at Freddy's (2014)[]

Players control Mike Schmidt, who has signed a contract for position as a night security officer at a family pizza restaurant called "Freddy Fazbear's Pizza". A voicemail message from Mike's predecessor plays each night, in which he explains different aspects of the history of the restaurant. He explains that the restaurant's four animatronic characters – Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy – become mobile at night because their servomotors will lock up if they are left off for too long. The employee warns Mike that if one of the animatronics encounters a human after hours, it will mistake them for an animatronic endoskeleton without a costume and will "forcefully stuff" them into a spare mechanical Freddy Fazbear costume, killing the person in the process.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (2014)[]

The player assumes the role of Jeremy Fitzgerald, a new security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in 1987. An unnamed employee calls Jeremy on the office phone each night to provide advice and information about the restaurant's backstory. He explains that the "new and improved" restaurant has introduced new animatronics, which have special facial recognition software and access to a criminal database to protect the children from potential harm. Despite these features, the robots were not programmed with a proper night mode; when they detect silence, their programming tells them they are in the wrong room and they seek out the nearest source of noise to find people to entertain, which happens to be Jeremy's office. The voice from the phone also explains that 'older' animatronics reside in the restaurant, but as the restaurant company opted to redesign the characters, they are kept for spare parts in a decrepit form.

Five Nights at Freddy's 3

Five Nights at Freddy's 3 (2015)[]

The player assumes the role of a newly hired employee at Fazbear's Fright, a horror-themed attraction inspired by the family restaurant Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza that closed thirty years prior. During the week before the attraction’s official opening, the employee must watch over the facility from a security office each night from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m., using a network of surveillance cameras placed in rooms and air vents. They must monitor the status of three operating systems – cameras, audio, and ventilation – and reboot them whenever they begin to malfunction. Camera problems cause the camera feeds to become obscured by static, and if ventilation fails, the employee’s vision begins to black out. The employee may also see hallucinatory "phantom" animatronics that resemble animatronics from the restaurant franchise, which can cause system malfunctions but cannot directly harm the player.

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 (2015)[]

The story of a young boy who is speculated to be the player character. In the first minigame, the boy is locked in his bedroom with plush toys, which he calls his "friends". One of the Plushes, based on the animatronic "Fredbear", provides console for the boy as he is teased and tormented for his fear of a family restaurant near his home. In the subsequent four minigames, he is deliberately scared, abandoned at the restaurant, teased by his peers, and unwillingly locked in the restaurant’s parts and services room. Two easter eggs can be discovered during the minigames; one briefly shows the purple figure previously featured in the second and third games fitting someone into an animatronic suit, while the other shows a program on a television screen dated 1983, presumably the year in which the minigames are set. Rumors are also mentioned of the animatronics of the restaurant coming to life at night.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location

Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location (2016)[]

Also known as Five Nights at Freddy's 5, Afton's son Michael is a new employee of Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental, an underground facility and sister location to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, featuring animatronics that are rented out to children's birthday parties. These include new circus-themed variations of the original animatronics: Funtime Freddy, Bon Bon, and Funtime Foxy, as well as several new characters such as Ballora, the Bidybabs, the Minireenas, and Circus Baby. These animatronics originated from Circus Baby's Pizza World, which was made in response to the popularity of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza but had been shut down shortly before it was supposed to open due to "gas leaks". As his first night starts, the assistant A.I. HandUnit assigns him his daily tasks. On Night 2, the power goes out, and the player must hide from Bidybab in order to reset the facility's circuit breakers. Circus Baby, who turns out to be sentient, warns Michael to ignore the instructions given by HandUnit to avoid being killed by Ballora, then gives Michael her own instructions. In a post-death minigame, Circus Baby extends a claw from her stomach and pulls a little girl inside, implying that the animatronic is now possessed by the girl's soul.

Freddy Fazbear's Pizzaria Simulator

Freddy Fazbear's Pizzaria Simulator (2017)[]

Also known as Five Nights at Freddy's 6, Sometime after the events of the third game, the player character is the new franchiser of the re-branded Fazbear Entertainment Inc., with headquarters in Washington County, Utah. After investing in the restaurant, the player is left with $100 to spend on a new restaurant. After the first night, they are encouraged to prepare for their "ultimate test", which is a big party on Saturday. The player invests on various props, animatronics, and sponsors to add to and fund the restaurant. After each day is over, the player is faced with checking maintenance with four possessed and dilapidated animatronics: Scrap Baby, which is Circus Baby rebuilt from scraps after being ejected from Ennard; Molten Freddy, the remains of Ennard with Funtime Freddy as its primary head; Lefty, a mysterious black bear animatronic; and William Afton, Fazbear's co-founder and child serial killer whose undead body remains inside his worn-out "Scraptrap" outfit. The player could either complete maintenance with guidance from an unnamed "Cassette Man" before salvaging it, or throw it back outside, unless it had already been hidden in a previously purchased low-quality object. The player is left to survive each night as the salvaged animatronics attempt to kill him.

Ultimate Custom Night

Ultimate Custom Night (2018)[]

Also known as Five Nights at Freddy's 7, in this game you play as the soul of William Afton, main antagonist of the FNaF franchise, living through his own personal Hell (whether he is in a coma or not or he is actually in Hell is debated,) where he is tortured for eternity by every single animatronic possessed by a soul that he created. After the player dies by certain characters, they speak certain lines that suggest that the player character is actually William Afton, who was killed in a fire at the end of the sixth game and his soul is now trapped in a purgatory-like state, tortured by various animatronics as consequences of his actions. Some of the speaking antagonists mention an unknown entity, referred to as "the one you should not have killed", who is thought to stay with Afton to torture him. The entity is widely regarded to be the spirit living inside Golden Freddy because, after unlocking every intermission cutscene, a cutscene of Golden Freddy, twitching and surrounded by darkness, is shown.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted

Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted (2019)[]

Also known as Five Nights at Freddy's 8, Fazbear Entertainment has become very unpopular due to several incidents and disasters that allegedly occurred at their various locations over the years, which have been established as urban legends. This problem is aggravated by a horror video game series based on the legends, created by an unnamed indie developer. In an attempt to overturn the bad reputation these rumors gave the company, Fazbear Entertainment commissioned the "Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience", a virtual reality game meant to make light of the rumors and convince players that those events were completely fictitious. However, this narrative is contradicted by sixteen cassette tapes hidden throughout the game, which contain logs recorded by one of the game's developers.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Special Delivery

Five Nights at Freddy's: Special Delivery (2019)[]

Also (technically) known as Five Nights at Freddy's 9, It begins with a simple premise - signing up for the Fazbear Funtime Service so that "you'll never be alone again". But as the story begins to unfold, players will realize that they may have signed up for more than they bargained for. Malfunctioning animatronics are delivered to their doorsteps for a series of frightening encounters. The inbox provides many tips for dealing with this, as well as some emails, not meant to be sent to the player. One series of emails tells the story of a man named Luis trying to inform a woman, Ness, about red-flag reports triggered by her harmful and offensive search words. The emails suggest that she is under the control of William Afton. Ness is heavily implied to be Vanny from Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted and Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach, as Ness is suggested to be under the control of William Afton just like Vanny. Another series of emails tells the story of the employees at Fazbear Entertainment scanning the circuit boards of old animatronics for Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted.

Freddy awakens back in his room where he discovers that a young boy named Gregory is hiding inside his stomach compartment. Around this time, the mall locks down for the night, trapping Gregory inside. Vanessa, the security nightguard, orders all animatronics and employee robots to search for Gregory, unaware that they are reprogramed to be murderous. Timeline[]

  • William Afton and Henry Emily create Fredbear's Family Diner with two robot animatronic mascots, Fredbear and Spring Bonnie.
    CharlieDeath

Charlie's death and transformation into the Puppet

  • In Fredbear's there is an animatronic puppet that they designed to keep track of the kids in the restaurant to make sure they are safe.
  • William Afton picks up an affinity for murdering children and drives by the diner to see Henry's daughter Charlie locked outside the restaurant, with the puppet unable to help her. Afton kills Charlie outside of the restaurant and dumps her behind the building before driving off.
  • The security puppet is upset for leaving her outside and leaves the restaurant in the rain to help her, and as it's deteriorating, and finds her dead body. It falls next to her, and her spirit possesses it.
    Fnaf4room

    FNaF 4 room

  • The events of Five Nights at Freddy's 4 takes place (1983)
    • Meanwhile, Afton's youngest son, Evan, is set to have a birthday party at the restaurant in five days, but he is absolutely fucking terrified of it. He watches as his father puts a trainee into the mascot costume and assumes that he's being stuffed in there and killed.
    • For the ensuing nights, Evan has visions of the Freddy Fazbear's mascots attacking him in the middle of the night. Finally, the day comes, and after weeks of being tormented by his brother Michael and his friends, he is shoved inside Fredbear's mouth, and it clamps down on him, killing him.
  • Ruined by the death of his son, William Afton, who is also the CEO of Afton Robotics, develops several more animatronics made specifically for killing kids. The more he kills, the more souls the Puppet (possessed by Charlie,) puts inside the suits, possessing them as well.
    ElizabethDeathfnaf

Elizabeth's death and transformation into Baby

  • Afton builds Circus Baby's Pizza World, as well as several other "sister locations" to the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza name, all in a secret attempt to murder kids. He builds one robot, known as Circus Baby, that has the express ability to locate lone children and then scoop them up with her "ice cream scoop" hidden inside her stomach. Unfortunately, Afton's daughter Elizabeth is caught alone with Baby, and she too is killed. Her soul then possesses baby.
  • While this is all going on, several restaurants are opened up and closed down. So far, we have one Fredbear's Family Diner, which closed down due to the death of Evan Afton, and the first iteration of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. Afton is still on his killing spree and uses the now closed down Fazbear's Pizzeria to lure and kill his victims.
    PurpleGuyDeath

Afton's death and transformation into Springtrap

    • Afton realizes that the animatronics were possessed, and so he attempted to take them all apart, his own creations (literally, because he built them, and figuratively because he killed the kids that possess them.)
    • He lures the animatronics in the rundown restaurant and hides in a hidden room, unable to be penetrated by the animatronics AI, and takes them apart. He unknowingly releases the vengeful spirits inside them, when they corner him in this back room. In a panic, Afton hides inside the Spring Bonnie suit that's left inside there, but the springlocks inside rupture and fold in on his body, crushing him and killing him.
  • The events of Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location take place (1983-ish)
    • Around the same time-ish, Michael Afton goes into the underground bunker beneath his house that contains the Funtime Animatronics including Circus Baby. He goes down there, posing as a security guard, in order to find his younger sister and help her. The animatronics down there confuse him for his father and become aggressive towards him.
    • The animatronics down there, themselves, are fighting between their animatronic AI and the souls that inhabit them. They want to escape this imprisonment, as they hate being show tools for this corporation. They are scooped apart, and their insides merge together to form Ennard. Ennard lures Michael into the scooping room, where it disembowels him and uses his body as a skinsuit to walk around.
      Scoopinroom

Michael in the scooping room before he's scooped

    • "Michael," becomes a walking corpse with these machine parts, all possessed, inside him. It turns him purple. Eventually, Ennard can't survive inside him for long, and it removes itself from him and hides in the sewers. Michael somehow survives this, as he has a new resolve to end the agony that his father started.
  • Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria opens up again with new management, known as the "grand re-opening." It uses Toy Animatronics made of plastics, remakes of the original ones with facial recognition software and a criminal database in order to prevent future threats. The original animatronics are left inside as well, withered from lack of use, however still possessed.
    Fnaf2room

    FNaF 2 location

  • The events of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 take place (1987)
    • Jeremy Fitzgerald is hired as a security guard in the grand re-opened pizzeria.
    • He spends five nights as a security guard, fending them off, including the Puppet which was the first spirit to possess an animatronic.
    • Eventually he is moved to the day shift, where he is killed by the Mangle. This would become known as the "Bite of '87."
    • In the following day, Michael Afton takes Jeremy's position as nightguard, (under the alias Fritz Smith,) where he sees firsthand the horrors his father created as he fends off these animatronics.
    • Michael is fired the next day for tampering with the animatronic suits and "odor," (likely caused by the fact that he is literally a walking corpse.)
    • Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, the grand re-opening, is short lived, as the restaurant is closed down and the Toy Animatronics are put out of use. The old and withered versions of the animatronics were set to be refurbished to be used again in a smaller scale version of the restaurant.
  • Several years later, the new pizzeria is opened up, this time a smaller building with only the original four animatronics (Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy.)
    Fnaf1room

    FNaF room

  • The events of Five Nights at Freddy's take place (2001)
    • Michael once again takes the opportunity to free the fallen souls, and becomes a security guard, this time under the alias Mike Schmitt.
    • Michael endures five nights, for the second time, fending off the animatronics and tampering with them to somehow figure out a way to free their souls.
    • Unfortunately, he is unable to do so, and he is fired from his job for tampering and odor once again.
    • The pizzeria once again closes its doors for the third (technically fourth,) and final time. The animatronics are put out of order, but their spirits haunt Michael for years to come.
  • Michael assumes that his duties are pretty much over. While he is still visited by the phantoms of the animatronics he fended off for years, he has nowhere to go, with his quest left unfulfilled. That is, until 30 years later, when an independent company starts the horror attraction known as Fazbear Frights. It uses old memorabilia and merchandise from the Freddy Fazbear's enterprise to create a horror attraction based on the rumors that came from the time when those restaurants were open.
    Fnaf3room

    FNaF 3 room

  • The events of Five Nights at Freddy's 3 take place (2031)
    • Michael once again takes up a job as a security guard here, and instead of fending off the actual animatronics this time, he is continually haunted by the vengeful phantoms of them.
    • In addition to this, Phone Dude reveals that they discovered "a real one," that being an animatronic, in a secret back room of one of the facilities. This animatronic is actually the corpse of William Afton inside of the Spring Bonnie suit. It's unknown if he is possessed, undead, or what, but he is pretty fucking alive. They put him in the attraction, and Michael fends off his father for five nights in this place.
    • Finally, on the fifth night, he burns the building to the ground, freeing the spirits of the original four children that died, and supposedly killing his father in the process.
  • Years pass, and Henry Emily, the co-founder of Fredbear's Family Diner and creator of the original animatronics, is still kicking. He is on a separate quest to free the souls of the animatronics, but not just the Afton's, but his own daughter. He creates Freddy Fazbear's Pizza place, a faux animatronic pizza restaurant, made to look like the originals.

Scraptrap's final death and descent into Hell

  • The events of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator take place (203?)
    • He hires someone to work shifts at this place (not knowing that it is in fact Michael Afton again,) to salvage animatronics they find in the back alley and fend them off for five nights.
    • What Michael and the animatronics don't know is that this is all a ruse, a trap set by William to lure all the remaining possessed animatronics in one place to get rid of them once and for all. It's revealed here that Ennard, who escaped out of Michael's body, recreated itself as Molten Freddy, and released Baby from its group. Baby also recreated itself as Scrap Baby.
    • It's also revealed that Afton, as Springtrap, survived the fire at Fazbear Frights.
    • Henry creates an animatronic suit to capture the Puppet, his daughter, and also lures her into the restaurant.
    • On the final night, Henry burns the place down, with him, Michael, and the four animatronics in it. Scrap Baby assumes that Michael is a gift to them, but Henry explains that this is the conclusion to all of the horror of this entire series. He burns the place down, putting a rest to the souls of Elizabeth and Michael Afton, his daughter, and the remaining spirits that possessed Molten Freddy. He then notes that a deep and dark pit of Hell has opened up for Afton, his old friend. The place burns down, and that's the end of it.
  • Afton is sent to Hell!
    Fnaf7room

    Afton's perspective in Hell

  • The events of Ultimate Custom Night take place (???, also widely debated as to whether or not it is truly canon)
    • William Afton is in Hell, tortured by all of his creations to fend against them for eternity the same way his son did in all the restaurants before him. He is tortured primarily by none other than Golden Freddy, who is possessed by a girl named Cassidy.
  • Fazbear Entertainment salvages the burnt material, including circuit boards for certain animatronics, left at the scene of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place and holds the "junk" for safe keeping.
  • The company decides to create a virtual reality (VR) video game to make light of the horrors of Fazbear Entertainment's past, and to ease some caution over the brand.
  • They use the salvaged material and scan it for code to be used in this VR game, which allows them easier ability to create maps and character models.
  • A man named Jeremy is hired to beta test the game, and while inside discovers "something" is alive inside. The code encrypted on the leftover material from Freddy's Pizza Place actually contained the immortal will of William Afton and manifested itself as a golden bunny inside the game known as "Glitchtrap."
  • Glitchtrap attempts to possess Jeremy, but in order to fend off his evil intentions, saws his face off while playing the game.
  • Meanwhile, another beta tester (an unnamed woman who we will refer to as Tape Girl,) is tasked with finishing his job where he left off.
  • Tape Girl has been leaving behind record tapes of her findings of the game and revealing all of this information on Jeremy throughout the whole process. As she is compiling these tapes, she too encounters Glitchtrap, and instructs the person supposedly listening to the tapes not to gather them all together, or else (what she calls) the Anomaly will break free.
  • Glitchtrap ends up possessing the tapes, and Tape Girl herself, and in the final tape she tells the listener to gather them together in order to "destroy" Glitchtrap (when in reality, she is making way for him to escape.)
    Glitchtrap

    Glitchtrap in FNaF: Help Wanted

  • Tape Girl's fate is left unknown, and her 16 tapes lay scattered throughout the VR game.
  • The events of Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted take place (204?)
    • Vanny, a new beta tester for the game, plays through the many minigames and side stories it presents.
      Vannymask

      Vanny's mask

    • Along the way, she discovers 16 tapes left behind by the previous beta tester of the game. In her efforts to do this, she accidentally awakens Glitchtrap, who possesses her digitally, and commands her to act out his evil deeds for him in the real world.
    • Vanny creates a white bunny outfit, reminiscent of Glitchtrap's, and leaves the VR world to carry out his will.

The e-mails intercepted by the player in Special Delivery

Vanny, still working for Fazbear Entertainment, exchanges emails between a man named Luis. Luis (whose nickname for her is "Ness,") tells her that her search results on the company computers has resulted in red flag warnings popping up on his system. Luis is none the wiser that Vanessa (Vanny, Ness,) is under the control of Glitchtrap (William Afton,) and considering his friendship with her, he chooses to ignore her strange searches.
  • The events of Five Nights at Freddy's: Special Delivery take place (204?)
    • Fazbear Entertainment rolls out another new service designed to fix the tarnished image of the brand by sending animatronics to people's houses. People involved in the special service are equipped with flashlights and shock units installed in their phones which they can use to stop the animatronics from going rogue.
    • The player (who is basically just you, whoever downloads the app,) receives several emails from other members of the service and representatives of the Fazbear brand, however once and a while they will intercept emails not intended for them, which include the emails sent between Luis Cabrera and Vanessa.
  • Vanny, possessed by Glitchtrap and William Afton's will, returns to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place, where Scraptrap was left to die in a fire. She uses her connections in the Fazbear Entertainment company to excavate this location and discovers that the faux pizzeria remains mostly intact underground, and Molten Freddy (now transformed into "The Blob" having melded together with the other animatronics on sight,) is there protecting it.
  • Vanny begins syphoning power out of the Pizza Place to use for the Fazbear brand's next big project.
  • Using the money taken from the Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality games, Fazbear Entertainment builds the Freddy Fazbear Mega Pizzaplex. An absolutely massive mega mall where Freddy and his gang sing songs and entertain kids. Inside there is a golf course, several arcades, go-carting, and much more.
  • Vanny uses her guise as a white bunny rabbit to lure children into the backrooms of this Pizzaplex to kill them, similar to her mentor Afton. She also poses as a security guard that works the night shift so she can keep an eye on the animatronics and make sure nothing goes awry for her real plan, which is to use the power generated from the Pizzaplex to resurrect William Afton.
  • Dozens of children go missing during this time.
  • Glamrock Bonnie, of the new Glamrock Animatronics in the Pizzaplex, goes against his code and is decommissioned and replaced with Montgomery Gator. Vanny uses the parts from Glamrock Bonnie and what's left from Scraptrap to form Burntrap.
  • The events of Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach take place (205?)
    • A young homeless boy named Gregory somehow ends up inside the Mega Pizzaplex and stowaways inside of Glamrock Freddy while he's performing. This causes him to glitch out and go unconscious. When he wakes up, he finds Gregory in his room. He realizes that the Pizzaplex has closed, and Gregory won't be able to leave until the doors open at 6 AM. To make matters worse, the security guard is after Gregory, and he knows he is in trouble if he is found.
    • Freddy guides Gregory throughout the Pizzaplex, uncovering items and clearance passes to delve further into it, trying to find a way out.
    • Meanwhile, Vanny is tracking him down as security guard and as a murderous bunny girl. She uses the Glitchtrap virus to infect the other Glamrock Animatronics to kill Gregory on sight if he is caught.
    • Gregory makes it to the doors finally after surviving for six hours with Freddy's help. He realizes that children will continue going missing if he doesn't return inside to do something about it.
    • Freddy and Gregory discover the ruins of Freddy's Pizza Place deep underground, and find themselves up against what remains of William Afton, (now known as Burntrap.)
Burntrap being taken away by the Blob
    • Gregory fends off the animatronics and burns Burntrap before it is taken away by the Blob, leaving both their fates unknown.
    • Gregory and Freddy leave the Pizzaplex in a hurry, burning it down (supposedly with Vanny still inside,) and live happily ever after.
