“This story is the tale of me starting to walk. Not in the physical sense... but in an adolescence to adulthood sort of way...”

— Johnny at the beginning of Part 7

Johnny Joestar, born Jonathan Joestar is the protagonist of Steel Ball Run and an integral part of history in JoJolion. He is the seventh protagonist of the series and the sixth to be referred to as JoJo.

A former genius jockey, Johnny, who is now a paraplegic, teams up with Gyro to enter the 1890 Steel Ball Run race. They seek to uncover Spins secrets and win the $50,000,000 cash prize. On their journey, they encounter various Stand abilities and confront U.S. President Funny Valentine, who wants the power of the Saint's Corpse. Johnny loses Gyro in a final battle but eventually avenges his death. He leaves the race to return Gyro's body to Italy.

Johnny met Rina Higashikata after the race, they married, and moved to Morioh, Japan, where they had a son, George Joestar III. Rina fell ill, so Johnny returned to America to obtain the Saint's Corpse to cure her. It worked, but the disease transferred to their son. To save both, Johnny sacrificed himself, using his Stand to transfer the disease. He was later crushed by a miraculous new Stand. He is buried under Twin Pine trees in Morioh, and it's believed his corpse gives Morioh its supernatural properties.

Johnny is both a user of Spin and a Stand User, who wields the Stand, Tusk, that allows him to shoot his nails out of his fingers like bullets, and manipulate Spin energy.

Physical Appearance[]

Johnny is a slim physically fit young man. He is a paraplegic, and has lame legs. He wears these weird light blue pajama looking clothes with pink star patterns. On his shoulders he has purple hearts. He wears a beanie looking hat with the same color and design as his clothes, and the hat has a horse's head design and a horse shoe facing the front of it. He has longish blonde hair.

In Part 8 he wears a visually similar outfit, this time in white and as a hoodie, and wears a sailor's hat over his original beanie.

Design Variants[]

In the flashback portion of In a Silent Way, Part 3, Johnny is a young boy. In one scene he wears a brown jacket over a shirt and tie, and in another he wears just about the same outfit he wears as an adult, with a slightly different beanie and beige pants.

In the flashback portion of Civil War, Part 2, Johnny wears another outfit reminiscent of his current outfit but this time with beige pants.

In Scary Monsters, Part 3 Johnny is afflicted by Diego Brando's Stand, Scary Monsters, and is being transformed into a dinosaur.

In Scary Monsters, Part 3 Johnny is shown using Tusk with some sort of bone apparatus on his shooting hand.

In Catch the Rainbow (On a Stormy Night...), Part 2 Johnny wears a large lightblue rain jacket.

In In a Silent Way, Part 3, Johnny and Gyro hide in mud from In a Silent Way's ability.

In In A Silent Way, Part 4 Johnny unlocks Tusk ACT2 and the bone formation on his hand turns into a star while using the Stand.

In The Promised Land, Sugar Mountain, Part 1, Johnny begins to be possessed by the Stand Sugar Mountain and is turned into a tree.

In Wrecking Ball, Part 1 Johnny wears a winter outfit with a large hood to stay safe in the cold.

Personality Traits[]

Johnny is kind of a jerk. He seems to be the only JoJo that acts less noble and more in his own self-interest.

Age[]

Johnny is 19 in Part 7 and 29 in the Part 8 flashbacks.

Powers and Abilities[]

Tusk[]

After Gyro teaches Johnny the basics of Spin, Johnny unlocks his Stand, Tusk, after having stepped through the Devil's Palm. Tusk evolves three times, and has four forms total- each with a new ability, each dependent on Spin.

  • ACT1; Spinning Nails: Johnny is able to make his fingernails, and later toenails, spin themselves at a high velocity and shoot them like bullets up to 10 meters. The nails have immense cutting power, capable of slicing through rock, cutting limbs clean off, or carving a tree into a humanoid shape in a matter of seconds. However, they do not possess the power to cut through metal. Once Johnny shoots a fingernail, they take a short time to grow back.
  • ACT2; Golden Rectangle Nails: When Johnny activates Tusk, the fingernails now rotate around his fingers like axes. Thus, when he shoots the fingernails, they possess a drilling property, which dramatically increases the power of the shots. For instance, one shot is able to blast away a large zone on impact. On the downside, the nails regrow considerably slower, and as such, Johnny must save his nails or he will find himself out of ammunition.
  • ACT3; Spatial Wormhole: The hole created by the nail shot, specifically the infinitely small rotating point at the end of the hole, becomes a special space which, due to the infinite proportion of Johnny's spin, is also infinite and becomes a wormhole through space. A tailpiece theorizes the space as a boundary between dimensions. Johnny alone can enter that "location" and anything other than him will be cut. This ability is limited by how long the holes can persist in the world. ACT4- Allows Johnny to shoot Golden Spin fingernail bullets that are imbued with infinite rotation. This infinite rotation can counteract any ability.
  • ACT4; Infinite Rotation: Following the principle of the Golden Spin, the energy wielded and embodied by Tusk ACT4 is infinite, allowing a wide array of otherwise impossible feats. One of the first abilities displayed by Tusk ACT4 is to be able to break through the dimensional barrier of Love Train and enter the space in which Valentine hides. Moreover, Tusk ACT4 defies the laws of gravity and therefore can move slightly and probably still influence Diego during the stopped time. The damage caused by the rotation is stated to be probably infinite as well. Like with ACT2 and ACT3, the energy of the Spin can persist inside objects even if Johnny misses a nail shot, and can be redirected toward a target.

Trivia[]

  • Johnny has a bug bite fetish.
  • Johnny's hat can be seen (along with the headwear of several other JoJo characters) in the SbR Shop featured in JoJolion.
  • He is referred to as "JoJo" only a few times, in the beginning, and in the Civil War arc there are materials of Johnny's with the name JoJo written on it.
  • He is the only protagonist of the series who is never seen with the Joestar birthmark in any media.
    • In JoJolion Chapter 110, Lucy Steel discovers Fumi's relation to the Joestars by seeing his star birthmark, alluding to the fact that she has seen it on Johnny before. Additionally, when she is riding on Fumi's back it reminds her of riding on horseback behind Johnny.
