“I strive to be a true gentleman! There are times when a gentleman has to be courageous and fight, even when his opponent is bigger than he is and he knows he's going to lose!”

— Jonathan Joestar, Chapter 1 "Prologue"

Jonathan Joestar is the protagonist of Phantom Blood and the first JoJo of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series.

He is characterized as being kind, honest, and loyal, as a direct counterpart to his adopted brother, the evil Dio. He sacrifices himself at the end of Part 1 in order to defeat Dio, but his sacrifice was in vain, as Dio was able to survive and attach his severed head onto Jonathan's post-mortem.

Jonathan's emblem

Jonathan fathered one child with his wife Erina before his death, George Joestar II, and through DIO using his body to procreate, is technically the father of Giorno Giovanna, Rykiel, Ungalo, and Donatello Versus.

He is a Hamon User, as well as posthumously the Stand User of The Passion, a Stand similar to Hermit Purple that is used by DIO in Part 3 through Jonathan's body.

Physical Appearance[]

Jonathan is a large physically fit man. He has blue longish hair and blue eyes. His usual outfit consists of him wearing a large blue short-sleeve crop top. He wears a backpack and grey jeans with brown boots. He also has thick brows.

Design Variants[]

In Dio the Invader, Jonathan wears a brown coat over his main outfit.

In Dio the Invader, as a 12-year-old boy, he has well-kept blue hair and wears a fancy suit over a white undershirt.

In Dio the Invader, he wears a striped jumpsuit while fawning over Erina.

In Dio the Invader, he also appears wearing a white tank-top and red boxing gloves while in a boxing match with Dio.

In Dio the Invader, as an adult playing rugby, he wears a large, long-sleeved jersey with white and aquamarine stripes.

In A Letter From the Past, when confronting Dio about poisoning their father, he wears a formal suit with a white ascot.

In Overdrive, Jonathan's entire body is completely bandaged while being cared for by Erina.

In Overdrive, on his walk with Erina when he first meets Will A. Zeppeli he wears a similar outfit to that of when he was young, but it is brown, and he wears a pink scarf.

In Overdrive, following his father's death, he wears some weird ass sweater over a brown long-sleeved shirt and wears a baseball cap backwards on his head.

In The Final Ripple! he wears a black tuxedo during his wedding with Erina.

In the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation Season 1 official reveal, Jonathan wears an outfit similar to that which appears in the Volume 4 illustration.

Johnny Joestar (second continuity) Part 7: Steel Ball Run

(Chapter 1)

The protagonist of the seventh part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, he was born to George II and Elizabeth Joestar in 1872. He is the version of Jonathan from the second JoJo continuity due to them sharing the same name, place in the family tree, and having other similarities like a rivalry with their version of Dio and a pet named Danny. In Johnny's case Danny is a rat instead of a dog.

History[]

Jonathan was born into the rich Joestar family in the late 1860s. When he was a young baby, he was in a carriage accident, which caused the death of his mother and the fateful meeting of his father, George Joestar, and Dario Brando.

10 years later, when Jonathan is 12, Dario Brando passes away, and his son, Dio, is adopted by Jonathan's father. The two of them instantly become rivals, while Jonathan tries to welcome his new brother, Dio is plotting the downfall of the Joestars so that he may steal their fortune.

Age[]

In the first episode Jonathan is 12 years old, and then in the rest of Part 1 he is 20 years old.

Personality[]

Jonathan is described, mostly by himself and by other people, as a true gentleman. He never acts out of his own self-interest, which directly mirrors his archrival Dio.

Powers and Abilities[]

Hamon[]

Having been taught this ancient technique by Will A. Zeppeli, Jonathan harnesses the sun in order to defeat vampires and zombies such as Dio and his minions.

Some of his attacks:[]

  • Zoom Punch- Allows him to dislocate his arm and stretch it a few feet in order to hit an opponent.
  • Overdrive- Basic punch imbued with Ripple.
  • Sunlight Yellow Overdrive- Sends Hamon through his body directly.
  • Scarlet Overdrive- Ripple attack imbued with flame.
  • Turquoise Blue Overdrive- Ripple attack performed underwater.
  • Metal Silver Overdrive- Ripple conducted through metal.
  • Life Magnetism Overdrive- Conducting Ripple through organic matter, magnetizing it.
    The Passion ico

The Passion (non-canon)[]

The Stand was likely always able to be used by Jonathan due to his mastery of Hamon, similar to Joseph's Stand. DIO was able to conjure it due to possessing Jonathan's body, but Jonathan himself never knowingly activated the Stand.

  • Divination - Hermit Purple's main ability is to divine information. By using any object or material in conjunction with Hermit Purple, Joseph Joestar can display any information he wishes to see. To date, he has used Hermit Purple to:
    • Produce psychic photographs by destroying a camera. Once broken, the camera produces a photograph which reveals the information as it is in that moment of time, such as an image of a person in their current situation. The Passion is used for divination purposes, such as being able to see where other people are at a given time and produce psychic images of events that are far away. Rose petals are also presented around the Stand similar to a type of aura.
    • They also likely conduct Hamon.

Trivia[]

JonathanP4questionmark

Rising sun of "justice," representative of Jonathan

  • Jonathan's birthmark, which is a staple among members of the Joestar Family, is never shown in the manga, but in the anime, it is retconned into the Tarkus and Bruford fight.
  • It is a misconception that Jonathan was named after a restaurant that Araki went to called "Jonathan's" as he was actually called Jonathan Joestar because Araki wanted to have a protagonist whose name had alliteration, like the name Steven Spielberg.
  • The animators for the Part 4 OP "Great Days" intended for Jonathan to be added somewhere in the OP, but the writers stopped them, and included the rising sun at the beginning to be a representation of him.
