“We've come a long way and there's no reason why we can't use what we've learned in our everyday lives. And who knows? We may have gotten the balance right today, but there's always tomorrow. There's no way of knowing what's around the corner. But as long as there's something worth fighting for, there's always a need for a ninja. And we'll be ready.”
Legacy of the Green Ninja is the second season and third installment of the Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu series. It was originally released on July 18th, 2012. The Gold Ninja is the mascot character for this season and Lord Garmadon is the main antagonist. The Stone Samurai Warriors serve as the villainous faction.
It is the third and final installment in the Prophecy of the Green Ninja arc. It ends the final battle between Light and Dark, which is between Lloyd, the Ultimate Spinjitzu Master, and the Overlord. The collectible weapons of this season are the Elemental Blades. It was originally intended to be the end of the series, but an outcry of support from the fans encouraged the writers to make Season 3.
In 2013, Tracey West adapted two episodes into novel format. The episodes being Child's Play, and Pirates vs. Ninja.
It is preceded by Rise of the Snakes and followed by Rebooted.
Plot Summary[]
With the Golden Weapons now in Lord Garmadon's possession, the ninja begin training Lloyd so he can face his father one day and save Ninjago, something which he was afraid of because of their bond. Garmadon works to thwart the prophecy by recruiting the masterless Serpentine and merging the 4 Golden Weapons into the powerful Mega Weapon. After Garmadon's last attempt ended with Lloyd being aged into a teenager, like his four mentors, Garmadon attempts to change the events of the past. The original four ninja follow Garmadon and use the Golden Weapons of the past to destroy the Mega Weapon, restoring the timeline and sending the Golden Weapons into space.
While Garmadon ends up being stranded on an island with a disembodied voice called the Overlord, the venom of the Great Devourer seeps into catacombs beneath Ninjago and reawakens the Stone Army, trapping the Serpentine underground in the process. Along with Misako, Lloyd's mother, the ninja travel to the Dark Island to stop Garmadon. The ninja fail to stop the countdown to the final battle, and the Overlord is revealed to be the dark lord from the prophecy. He possesses Garmadon and heads to Ninjago.
After they found a way out of the Island, Lloyd uses his newfound Golden Power to defeat the Overlord and become the Golden Ninja. After the Final Battle, Lord Garmadon is purged from evil and comes back to Ninjago as Sensei Garmadon.

Notes[]
- This is one of the two seasons to contain 13 episodes, the other being Rise of the Snakes.
- This was originally intended to be the last season of Ninjago, as the franchise was planned to be discontinued in 2013. However, fan demand had convinced the creators to continue it.
- In the version of the intro used in episodes 14-18 before Lloyd was aged up, Wu's beard appeared more like the one on his minifigure. In Episode 19, it returned to its normal appearance similar to that of the Rise of the Snakes intro.
- In episodes 15-24 the tune of the audio was about half a semitone to about a semitone lower.
- Information regarding how the season was split up:
- The Hageman Brothers explained the reason for this split, stating, "when we were obligated to start writing, we didn’t know who the baddies were (stone army). So to buy time, we had a buncha one offs with a new Garmadon threat each episode."
- In the words of Tommy Andreasen, "We didn't know where to go with the story so we wrote 80s tribute episodes until we found out."
- The ending of the season was always planned to be Lloyd saving Garmadon.
- Season 2 is titled Lord Over (オーバー卿編) in Japan.
Continuity[]
- The Ninjago City Museum makes its first appearance this season, although Doctor Sander Saunders does not appear yet.
- The Serpentine sarcophagus seen in the museum will later be revealed to be that of one of the ancient Hypnobrai that Aspheera and the Pyro Vipers once belonged to. It is possible that Char is currently entombed in it.
- Krux, under the guise of Sander Saunders, builds his army of Vermillion behind the walls of the museum in secret.
- The serpentine portraits on display in the museum are said by Skales to be fakes. In Season 4 it is revealed that Master Chen has the authentic paintings on display on his island.
- The Overlord is destroyed in the center of Ninjago City, which will eventually become the birthplace of New Ninjago City and the location of Borg Tower (as well as the birthplace of the Digital Overlord.)
- The Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu are destroyed in the past in the episode Wrong Place, Wrong Time, as they are shot into space. They will eventually land on Delta V, a comet flying in the solar system nearby. Because of a time paradox, the Golden Weapons will be sent there more than once and turn into a huge ball of Golden Metal.
- The guts of the Great Devourer that seeped over the city at her death continue puddling through the city. Her guts dripping onto the Stone Samurai Warriors is what causes them to be awakened.
- It's revealed in this season that the First Spinjitzu Master created Ninjago and was at war with the Overlord at the beginning of Time. In order to defeat him, he bisected Ninjago in half, turning the Overlord's side into what will become known as the Dark Island.
- It is revealed that Dr. Julien apparently has been alive all along, after supposedly having died before rebooting Zane. He was imprisoned in a lighthouse guarded by a Leviathan for years, forced to build the weapons and machinery for Garmadon's Skulkin Army. When Samukai never returned, Julien was left all alone to fend for himself in the lighthouse for years before the Ninja showed up.
- This season marks the introduction of the character Noble, who is introduced as the principal of Darkley's School for Good Children. He is later seen in the series as the warden of Kryptarium Prison in Season 4 onwards.
