“Just you wait, Chainsaw Man! I'll make you vomit nuclear weapons back up!”
Part 2 of Chainsaw Man, subtitled Academy Saga, is preceded by Public Safety Saga. Asa Mitaka and Yoru are the protagonists and Death Devil is the main antagonist. The Chainsaw Man Church and Public Safety are this part's villainous factions.
This part introduces the other Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Yoru the War Devil, the Death Devil, and Kiga the Famine Devil. It follows Asa Mitaka and her relationship with Yoru, whose ultimate goal is to wage war with Chainsaw Man; meanwhile Death, under the guise of Kiga, tries to prepare for the awakening of the Death Devil by creating fear in the names of War and Chainsaw, making Denji and Yoru powerful enough to kill herself to stop the oncoming apocalypse.
It is the ongoing most recent part of the Chainsaw Man series that began serialization in 2022, on the Shonen Jump+ app. It has so far been collected into nine tankoban volumes by Jump Comics.
The Part 2 manga has been being simulpubbed in English weekly on the Shonen Jump App since it began in Japan in 2022 and released its first paperback volume in English in 2023.

VIZ Media[]
Return to the world of Chainsaw Man and meet awkward high school student Asa Mitaka. She may have trouble getting along with her fellow students and the class pet devil chicken, but Asa has something special going for her. And it may lead her right to Chainsaw Man!
Summary[]
Devil Hunters Club Arc[]
After becoming the host of Yoru, the War Devil, the highschool student Asa Mitaka will have to help her take revenge on Chainsaw Man. In doing so, she will have to face two students who have made a contract with the Justice Devil.
Infinite Aquarium Arc[]
After the chaos at Fourth East School, Asa Mikata meets the Devil Hunter Club leaders, including Seigi Akoku, who lost an eye fighting Yuko, club president Haruka Iseumi, and the mysterious hunter who resurrected Yuko. Yoru takes over and asks Haruka about the Chainsaw Devil's membership, which he confirms by showing a ripcord in his chest like Denji's. Yoru tells Asa she needs a strong weapon to defeat him, suggesting a sacrifice. Asa decides to sacrifice Denji, seeing his self-centered behavior.
Asa asks Denji on a date, which turns disastrous as he gets bored and leaves her. The Famine Devil appears, trapping them until Asa can turn Denji into a weapon. Denji believes the Eternity Devil is behind this. They meet Haruka, Seigi, and Yoshida, finding a staff lounge with supplies. Asa accidentally breaks her phone, isolating them. Haruka reveals he's not Chainsaw Man, just a fan. Yoshida asks Denji to eat the Death Devil. Denji finds hungry Asa, helps her eat starfish, and cheers her up. Together, they collect money and Asa uses her guilt to create a spear, defeating the Eternity Devil.
Denji walks Asa home, enjoys the date, and invites her to another, which Asa agrees to. Yoru tries to turn Denji into a weapon, but it fails, suggesting he doesn't reciprocate Asa's feelings. The next day, Denji proposes a movie marathon at his house. Yoru ignores the house rule against kissing, takes over Asa, and kisses Denji to turn him into a weapon. Nayuta, Denji's sister, interrupts, using her Control Devil abilities to make Yoru act like a dog. Nayuta agrees to turn Asa back if Denji stops seeing her, then erases Asa and Yoru's memories, making them think Denji stood them up. Asa is approached by Yoshida, who asks her to keep him company.
Yoshida takes Asa to the Devil Hunter's Club council room for coffee, revealing they have much in common. Asa thinks he will confess but he instead orders her to stay away from Denji. Nayuta detects a strong devil scent, while a lethargic Denji is convinced by Nayuta to fight again.
Falling Devil Arc[]
Asa walks home feeling sad and depressed after being rejected twice in a day, unknowingly affected by the Falling Devil's ability. She rants self-deprecatingly while Yoru tries to comfort her. Near her apartment, a man falls to his death beside her, and Yoru takes over, warning Asa to stay back. They see the complex's occupants staring down at them. Meanwhile, Yoshida meets Kiga in a restaurant and questions her about the Nostradamus prophecy, learning about a primal fear arriving on Earth.
Back with Yoru, dozens of people fall to their deaths, their corpses merging into one entity. Yoru tries to flee with Asa, who is trapped in a traumatic memory. Asa briefly regains control but loses it again. Yoru, trying to keep Asa focused, cuts her hand, which backfires as Asa becomes afraid of her. They argue, and Asa has a mental breakdown.
The Falling Devil kills multiple devil hunters and serves one to the Hell devils, announcing Asa and Yoru as the "main dish." She collects body parts and is attacked by snipers, revealing her invulnerability. Denji attacks her but is defeated. A mysterious figure heals Denji with their blood, and the Falling Devil finds Asa.
The Falling Devil convinces Asa to accept death, but Denji saves her. Asa initially resists but is calmed by Denji, who says sex motivates him. Disgusted, Asa rebuffs him, causing Denji to start falling into Hell. Asa falls unconscious, and Denji carries her towards a door out of Hell. He is decapitated but reassembles himself. Falling Devil blocks their escape but is impaled by another Chainsaw Man, allowing them to escape.
Chainsaw Man War Arc[]
After surviving the Falling Devil's attack, Public Safety warns Denji that if he transforms into Chainsaw Man again, Nayuta will be killed. He reluctantly agrees and tries to live a normal life but questions if that’s what he really wants.
Denji is set up on a date with Fumiko Mifune, an agent and fan of his, but rejects her after learning she’s paid to spend time with him. He then meets Miri Sugo (Sword Man), who persuades him to visit the Chainsaw Man Church. There, Barem Bridge tempts him to kill Asa to unleash his Black Form. The church is revealed to be a cult with disturbing practices, worshiping Chainsaw Man and faking his presence on TV. Spooked, Denji leaves, but the church members, empowered by the Fire Devil, launch a massive attack.
Quanxi, now working for Public Safety, eliminates many enemies. Meanwhile, Asa is targeted for her ties to the church and escapes after losing an arm, gaining the ability to create weapons without touching objects. Public Safety also ambushes Denji, but Quanxi helps him escape with Nayuta. However, their home is burned down, pushing Denji to embrace Chainsaw Man again. In his rage, he slaughters the Weapon Devils, horrifying Nayuta. The public, mistaking him for a church follower, attacks him, forcing Nayuta to intervene—only to become their next target.
Denji is captured, wakes up in a facility, and learns Public Safety now owns him. As they harvest his body, Asa and Kiga storm the facility, freeing him with the help of Samurai Sword and Quanxi. They take refuge in Kiga’s hideout, where Denji, devastated over Nayuta’s disappearance, refuses to eat. Searching for her, they return to his burnt apartment, finding nothing. To cheer him up, Samurai suggests a brothel, but they discover it’s been burned down too, leaving Denji emotionally shattered.
At a sushi restaurant, Barem appears, offering to reunite him with Nayuta if he helps him. As they talk, Nayuta’s severed head arrives on the conveyer belt. Enraged, Denji kills Barem and transforms into Black Chainsaw Man, the Hero of Hell.
Aging Devil Arc[]
With Black Chainsaw Man out in the open, Public Safety dispatches Special Division 5, a team of specially devised agents who's sole tasks are to defeat the ultimate form of Chainsaw Man. Chainsaw Man ravages them, eating the devils within the group including the likes of the Ear Devil and the Mouth Devil, temporarily causing ears and mouths to disappear from Earth. Meanwhile, Yoru finally prepares her plan of attack against Chainsaw Man, which she has been preparing for since she first met Asa.
Yoru confronts Chainsaw Man and enlists the help of her two sons, Tank and Gun, to grow her arms back and to use them as weapons. She uses a sleeping Devil inside the Statue of Liberty to blast a hole through Chainsaw Man, which almost causes his defeat, however the two of them are transported into another world by a mysterious primal devil: Aging.
Aging has been enlisted to help Public Safety take down Chainsaw Man, as their ultimate goal is for Chainsaw Man to eat Aging so that people will become unable to age. All of this in an effort to stop the Death Devil's prophesized coming.
Waking up in Aging's world, Denji and Asa struggle to find a way out, discovering that those who are trapped here do not age, but eventually transform into trees, as that is naturally what happens to humans if they are unable to die by aging. Denji realizes that the trees in the forest around him are all people, and that his stomach, Chainsaw Man, is still in the real world. He rips the trees apart and starts eating the innards of the people that turned into them, fueling Chainsaw Man in the real world to battle against Aging.
Realizing that Denji is connected to Chainsaw Man's stomach, Yoru sticks her arm in Denji's mouth to shoot Aging in the face, but that doesn't seem to work either. Denji ends up barfing up a bunch of devils he previously swallowed, which includes Yoshida and the Octopus Devil. With Yoshida's help, the three of them escape and lock Aging back in his own world.
Now rid of the Aging Devil and their attackers, Asa, Denji, Yoshida, and Kiga all go out to eat, where Yoru finally reveals her true form to Denji.

Chain Run (2023) | |
---|---|
Chain Run, released with the tagline "Slash it Open with a Stolen Bike!!" is an 8-bit style web browser mobile game released on August 3rd, 2023, to commemorate the release of Volume 15 in Japan. It features unique 8-bit sprite art of both Asa and Denji, with Pochita as the mascot on the website. It was initially released alongside a campaign to win a Chainsaw Man bike figure, depicting the bike that Denji and Asa ride during the Falling Devil Arc. The aim of the game is to measure the number of Devils (including the likes of the Tomato Devil, Chicken Devil, and a small Eternity Devil) defeated and the number of distances escaping the Falling Devil's wrath, while also encountering some larger Devils from Part 1 like the Gun Devil. | ![]() |
Creation and Development[]
Fujimoto feels that a hero's journey can only end when the hero gives up being one, and since Denji is unable to give up being Chainsaw Man, there had to be a Part 2.[1] According to his editor, Lin, they had been making plans for a Part 2 since Volume 6 or 7 of Public Safety Saga.[2]
Fujimoto intentionally left certain things vague at the end of Part 1 that made making Part 2 a lot easier, as he said he of course plans things from the beginning, but often plot points get pushed back or removed for the sake of time. He stated a year before its release that he wanted Part 2 to feel like a completely different story than Part 1.[3][4]
He's also described the story as being chaotic and wanting to tell a story that feels incomplete while also conveying a certain theme and plot.[5]
Iconography[]

Denji and Asa with blood spatter behind them
The second part of Chainsaw Man doesn't so far have much if any unique iconography to represent it or differentiate it at all from its predecessor. It mostly continues the same motifs as the previous part. The only colored artwork that released alongside the series when it began serialization used a mix of reds and violets, with Chainsaw Man himself as the mascot along with Asa Mitaka and blood spatter behind them. Yoru appears on the cover of the first volume of the series and appears as the mascot of the series along with Chainsaw Man in promotional material on the Shonen Jump+ website, which happens to be the only official source to split the two parts up. The announcement for Part 2's beginning serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump also featured Asa holding a chainsaw with blood dripping off it.
The logo remains unchanged between the first two parts, however, to differentiate the two, the logo position is changed to fit vertically on the right side of each cover, as opposed to positioned at a 90-degree angle over the top and right in the first 11 volumes.
Trivia[]
- Yuko calling Asa "Chainsaw Woman" is subtle foreshadowing that she is aware of Yoru's possession of her, as "Chainsaw" and "War" are pronounced similarly in Japanese, being "Chēnsō" and "Sensō" respectively
- The title of the first chapter and first volume of Part 2, Bird and War, is reminiscent of the first chapter title of Part 1, Dog and Chainsaw.
- The title of Chapter 2 may be a reference to the idiom, "killing two birds with one stone." The two birds in this chapter are Mitaka and the War Devil, two minds inside one body, both called "birds" because of the form the War Devil takes in the previous chapter.
- As of Chapter 195, Part 2 has surpassed Part 1's length in chapter count. It is still shorter by page count, however.
Continuity[]
- The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are all revealed in the second part after being alluded to in Part 1.
- The Control Devil, Nayuta, is the reincarnation of Makima who was killed by Denji at the end of Part 1. Although she is still young, she seems to be aware of her sister's powers, especially Death.
- Denji is raising Nayuta, who is smart enough to go to college, and is trying to make money for her so she can have a normal life. When Nayuta appears for the first time she is walking her and Denji's dogs, and the leashes on the dogs are in the same position that Makima held characters in her control with chains in the Control Devil Arc.
- It's revealed that when Nayuta was born she felt the urges of the Control Devil to finish what Makima started and make Denji's life happy before ripping it away. Unlike Makima, though, she was shown how to be loved and became a part of Denji's family where she wanted to protect him more than anything else.
- The War Devil, Yoru, is the first to appear as she makes a contract with Asa in the first chapter and acts as the deuteragonist of the entire part. Since the battle with Chainsaw Man in Hell with the other Horsemen and the Weapon Devils, Yoru reveals that Chainsaw Man bit off a large chunk of her, as she now takes the form of a small bird-like Devil, similar to Pochita's damaged form being a small dog.
- The Death Devil is the second to appear and acts as the overall main antagonist of the second part. Her Devil form is not shown, but she expresses interest in stopping a prophecy that tells that she will awaken to create an age of devils and destroy humanity. For most of the part she operates under the assumed identity of her sister, the Famine Devil.
- The Famine Devil, Kiga, is the final Horseman to appear, also as a student at Fourth East High, and she attempts to stop the coming of Death until she is killed and taken under his eldest sister's control.
- The Control Devil, Nayuta, is the reincarnation of Makima who was killed by Denji at the end of Part 1. Although she is still young, she seems to be aware of her sister's powers, especially Death.
- Chapter 101 marks the second time a reincarnated Devil appears in the series, being the Bat Devil, following Nayuta. The Eternity Devil was also reincarnated, and remembers the last time it fought Denji, knowing now not to show itself to him to keep him trapped in the aquarium.
- After the end of the Public Safety Saga, Denji started going to school and began trying to get his secret identity out so he can get girls attention.
- Since Part 1, Hirofumi Yoshida has been going to the same school as Denji and Asa, trying to make sure that Denji does not get into any trouble.
- Yoshida mentions if Denji can eat the Death Devil, which not only means that he is aware of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but he knows of Denji's secret power.
- The Octopus Devil's face is seen for the first time in this part after first being introduced in Part 1 as just tentacles that can be summoned by Yoshida.
- Denji makes reference to his eating Makima at the end of Part 1 when talking to Asa about whether or not Chainsaw Man eats humans.
- The character Miri Sugo, the Sword Devil Hybrid, appears for the first time since Part 1. His name and Devil are revealed and meets Denji again to recruit him into the Chainsaw Man Church where the other Weapon Devils have formed a community. They hold Denji as their hero because he freed them by killing Makima.
- Other Devil Hybrids reappear in the Chainsaw Man Church, including the Flame Thrower Hybrid, named Barem, and the Whip and Spear Hybrids, who go unnamed.
- Since Part 1, Barem wants to continue what Makima started, which is turn Denji into his Black Chainsaw Man form so that he can eat a devil and make him disappear out of existence. What we find out is that it's possible that chainsaws used to have this existence erasure ability in the past, but this too was eaten by Chainsaw Man, causing people to forget what it was.
- Quanxi, the Crossbow Hybrid Devil who appeared as a major antagonist in the International Assassins Arc in Part 1 reappears in Chapter 144 helping Public Safety deal with the remaining Hybrids working for the Chainsaw Man Church.
- Her lovers' bodies are mentioned to be being kept by Public Safety against her will and are using them to make her do whatever they want.
- Samurai Sword, the main antagonist of the Samurai Sword Arc from Part 1 also returns as an agent of Public Safety. His deep hatred of Chainsaw Man continues as he fights against the members of the Chainsaw Man Church who transformed into mini-Chainsaw people. He ends up bonding with Yoru, who is intent on fighting Chainsaw Man during the Tokyo Devil Detention Center Arc, saying his heart beats to fight Chainsaw Man, solidifying that he is Denji's true rival.
- He realizes in Everyday Scenery that his grandfather can't be avenged by killing Denji, so he makes amends with him.
- It's revealed that he used to own a brothel before it was destroyed in the Chainsaw Man War.
- In Chapter 163, Samurai Sword gets his revenge on Denji for him and Aki taking turns at his nuts from the end of the Samurai Sword Arc by stomping on his nuts while he sleeps.
- Other Devil Hybrids reappear in the Chainsaw Man Church, including the Flame Thrower Hybrid, named Barem, and the Whip and Spear Hybrids, who go unnamed.
- Fumiko Mifune reveals that her parents were killed during Denji and Aki's fight during the Gun Devil Arc, and that she became a fan of Denji when she realized Chainsaw Man wasn't a superhero, but some kid.
- Pochita accepts that Denji has achieved his dream of living a normal life but moves on to the next stage and asks what his next dream will be, which Denji says is to be Chainsaw Man again.
- Denji's monologue about massages in Chapter 152 during his fight with the Hybrids is a reference to his first fight with the Hybrids over a sign for a Thai massage.
- Kishibe is mentioned in Part 2 for the first time in Chapter 161 by Quanxi. She reveals that he told her not to mess with Chainsaw Man, because even though she is stronger than him, he is more fearsome.
- Special Division 5 makes its return, as it was formerly headed by Makima with the Weapon Hybrids, now it is made up of several Fiends whose main goal is to kill Black Chainsaw Man.
- It's revealed in Two Children that the Gun Devil, who was previously a major antagonist in Part 1, is actually the son of Yoru the War Devil. Another one of her sons is the previously unseen Tank Devil.
- This seems to also reveal the fact that Devils can have spawn, which makes Yoru the first instance of a Devil with children, although it's possible to assume that Devil's spawn existed considering the fact that the Four Horsemen are each other's "sisters".
- A possible correlation is Makima's "BANG" attack, that Yoru is able to replicate using the powers of her son the Gun Devil. This may possibly confirm that Makima's use of the "BANG" attack is from a contract with the Gun Devil.
- The scene of Power, Aki and Denji going to Hokkaido to visit Aki's families' graves flashes in Denji's mind inside of the Aging Devil's world, as Denji recalls how cold it was that day on the boat. Denji also recalls Reze when he barfs up the Snow Devil. This is the first time Reze is mentioned in Part 2.
- Denji points out how the Aging Devil doesn't understand Pochita's true feelings, like how Makima didn't actually understand him either.
- Denji calls himself a perpetual motion machine in the same chapter, similarly to his fight with the Eternity Devil.
- Denji remembers his and Power's promise at the end of Part 1 to find each other in Hell. He realizes that she's probably going to just be a stranger to him again, but hopes he can see her when the age of devils descends with the Death Devil.
