— The beginning of the Oracle of Maia

Shin Megami Tensei Persona 2: Innocent Sin is the second installment in the Persona series. Tatsuya Suou is the main protagonist and Joker is the main antagonist. The Masked Circle is the villainous faction in this game.

Innocent Sin is the first in the Persona 2 duology, followed by Eternal Punishment. It follows Tatsuya and his friends in their efforts to stop the Masked Circle from destroying the world, and uncovering the plot perpetrated by the Crawling Chaos, Nyarlathotep. It is one of the few Persona games that acts as a direct sequel to a previous game.

Originally titled Persona 2: Sin in Japan, Innocent Sin first released on the PlayStation in 1999. It is one of the only Persona games not to release in the United States.

An enhanced port for the PSP was released in 2011. It featured enhanced music tracks and a revamped UI. This version released in the US.

It is proceeded by Megami Ibunroku Persona and is succeeded by Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.

Official Description[]

Persona 2: Innocent Sin begins three years after the events of the first Persona, in 1999. The location is Sumaru City, a large fictional metropolitan area set in modern day Japan. Sumaru City becomes cursed after events during the beginning of the game that cause any rumor that spreads enough to become true.

Summary[]

The silent protagonist of the game is Tatsuya Suou. Tatsuya is dragged into the plot by Lisa Silverman, a fellow student who idolizes Tatsuya, when conflict between Seven Sisters High School (Sevens) and Kasugayama High School (Cuss High) begins. The two come across Eikichi Mishina, the self-proclaimed boss of Cuss High. After getting into a fight, the three play a game summoning the Joker, a mysterious antagonist rumored to appear before anyone that calls him. Anyone who fails to tell Joker their wishes, either because they lack one or refuse to tell him, has their "ideal energy" stolen, reducing them to ambition-less shells called Shadow Selves. Once summoned, Joker claims that the three students had done something terrible to him in the past, and is angered when they do not recognize him. Swearing revenge and wielding an odd Crystal Skull, he departs, leaving the trio confused and eager to learn more about him. Later on they make a point of saying that Tatsuya and the Joker look alike.

Eventually, the three students are joined by Maya Amano and her friend, Yukino Mayuzumi, who returns from the first game and is already familiar with demons and capable of using her Persona. The five then search for Joker, the source of all rumors that spread becoming reality. Their search leads the group to clash with a cult-like following known as the Masked Circle. It is later revealed that the original Masked Circle was the group of friends including Tatsuya, Maya, Lisa, Eikichi, and Jun when they were all kids. After debunking numerous rumors and defeating several members of the Masked Circle, the group meets with Joker, who then reveals himself to be Jun Kurosu, the fifth childhood friend and member of the original Masked Circle. Eventually, the widely spread rumor that the Fuhrer had survived World War II with his secret forces, the Last Battalion, surfaces and his forces invade Sumaru City. Tatsuya and the others fight off both remaining Masked Circle members and the Last Battalion soldiers to obtain the crystal skulls, defeating their own Shadows in the process.

Towards the end of Innocent Sin, Tatsuya and the others board an alien spaceship known as the Xibalba, another rumor that had spawned into reality. In the deepest parts of Xibalba, the group finds the Fuhrer, wielding the Spear of Destiny (the spear that pierced Jesus Christ that is said to leave a mortal wound the second it strikes flesh) and defeats him.

At the conclusion of the game, it is revealed that all of the events had been orchestrated by Nyarlathotep in an attempt to show that the negatives of humanity would outshine the positives, contrary to Philemon's beliefs. Nyarlathotep then takes his true form and fights Tatsuya and the others. After the fight, Nyarlathotep manipulates Maya Okamura into striking Maya Amano with the Spear of Destiny, killing her quickly. With the prophecy fulfilled, the Earth's rotation suddenly stops, destroying everything on the surface of the planet, save for Sumaru City. Philemon tells Tatsuya that there is a way to prevent Maya's death and stop Nyarlathotep from destroying the world. Tatsuya agrees to create a new timeline in which Nyarlathotep is not successful, in exchange for everyone's memories.

Principal Hanya
Principal Hanya After the events of St. Hermelin High School, Takashi Hanya was transferred to the Seven Sisters High School and became a principal there. Despite him retaining his harsh and strict personality, all of the students and staff love and obey him unquestioningly. When Tatsuya Suou and his party confront him in the school's clock tower, it is revealed that this was the effect of a deal he made with Joker which is also the cause for his regained hair. With no resolution in sight, Hanya attacks the party to defend the giant emblem in the stained glass of the tower. Seven Sisters High School
Council President
Council President At the time of the humiliating defeat of Sugimoto at Club Zodiac, Yasuo was organizing the Cuss High school festival, which he was to use as an opportunity to gather Ideal Energy from the assistants to the school's dance. During this, rather than directly engage Tatsuya Suou's group, he lured them into the school's fabled bomb shelter in the hope they would die there (though he did offer Maya Amano the possibility to escape, she gleefully spat it back to him). Club Zodiac
King Leo
Prince Taurus In desperation, he performed the Master Joker summoning ritual, and was enlisted by Joker into the Masked Circle as one of the Masked Four, Prince Taurus, tasked with collecting Ideal Energy from young people. Through rumors he spread, he created a fake band called MUSES, involving Lisa Silverman, Asatchi and Miipo from Seven Sisters High School. However, he is humiliatingly defeated by Tatsuya Suou and forced back into obscurity. Aoba Park
Bitch an da gob
Ixquic & Belphegor Belphegor is fought as a boss alongside Ixquic in Smile Hirasaka's bathroom when the party tries to prevent the place from being destroyed by King Leo's bomb. Smile Hirasaka
Lord Tourus
King Leo Shortly afterwards, Sudou set fire to the Alaya Shrine only for Maya Amano to break out of the shrine using her Persona, Maia. Dubbing her a "witch", Sudou attempted to kill her, only to flee after Tatsuya Suou burned out his eye using his Persona. Despite this, the incident heavily traumatized Maya, leaving her with severe pyrophobia. He eventually joined the Masked Circle as King Leo and served as the right hand man to Joker, and Nyarlathotep also made Joker believe that Tatsuya Suou was the arsonist who killed Maya instead of Sudou (who actually just traumatized her). Ixquic acts as his subordinate, although he has no qualms of trying to sacrifice her when she questions him. Because Joker is in fact Kashihara's son, his loyalty towards Joker possibly stems from the physical resemblance between the two. He uses the Persona Reverse Vulcanus during battle. Alaya Shrine
Shadow Maya
Shadow Maya When the party decided to go to Mt. Iwato at Lisa's request, "Maya" began to act strangely by saying things that didn't match her personality when they saw past events on each Mirror Spring. Yukino was the first one to notice this, but ignored it. When everyone reached the last Mirror Spring they saw how "Big Sis" was locked up by the kids in the Alaya Shrine. When Lisa interrupts the event, "Maya" attacks the party, telling them that she was Big Sis and how she hated them because of the hell she went through and that they will suffer the same terror that she had to. When she is about to strike and kill Tatsuya and the others, another Maya blocks the attack. Kuzonoha Detective Agency
Longinus
Longinus powerful robotic enemies in Persona 2: Innocent Sin, the elite soldiers of the Fuhrer's Last Battalion. They get their name from their thirteen members and from the legend of Saint Longinus, the Roman soldier that stabbed Jesus Christ with a spear when he was crucified. Mount Katatsumuri/ Xibalba
Lady Scorpio
Lady Scorpio If the player chooses to force Yukino Mayuzumi to accompany the party to Caracol, Yukino will be there to counteract her Shadow Self and Anna will ultimately assist Yukino in the fight. Later Anna promises to take care of Yukino once the latter transfers her Persona ability to Jun Kurosu. If the player leaves Yukino behind, Anna will be manipulated by Shadow Yukino and the two will attack the party. After their defeat, Shadow Yukino kisses Anna, and they both jump from the bridge to their implied demise. Anna wields the Reverse Persona Aeshma in battle. Caracol
Joker Nyarlathotep
Joker When the party finally reaches him at the Caracol, the Fuhrer, his troops and the Shadow Selves of Tatsuya, Lisa and Eikichi can be seen alongside Joker, who collects the five crystal skulls to unleash Xibalba. Maya tells him that dreams shall not be given but attained via one's own power, yet Joker rebukes her as having an overly sugarcoated view, with the Furher agreeing with him, that humanity only wants a ruler to think for them, and Joker announces that he will guide humanity to a golden age. Despite this, Nyarlathotep reaches out to him and tells him that he is Joker and Tatsuya Suou is the arsonist. Caracol
Angel Joker
Angel Joker After Joker is defeated by Tatsuya Suou and his party in the Caracol, he is possessed by his Persona Joker-Nyarlathotep, who says that since people view him as an angel, he shall make him such. After Angel Joker is defeated, Joker is unmasked as Jun Kurosu and stripped of his Persona by Nyarlathotep. Caracol
Shadow Eikichi
Shadow Eikichi After the three Shadows escaped, four temples appeared along the city: Leo Temple, Aquarius Temple, Taurus Temple, and Scorpio Temple. Shadow Eikichi was at the end of the Scorpio Temple protecting the crystal skull of said temple. When Tatsuya and the others arrive to where Shadow Eikichi is, the latter is shown to be hugging Miyabi Hanakouji, Eikichi's childhood friend. Of course, Miyabi didn't know that Shadow Eikichi was a fake because the latter was showing the "affection" that Miyabi wanted Eikichi to have for her. The Shadow taunts Eikichi by telling him that Miyabi joined the Masked Circle and wished to be thin because he, Eikichi, drove her to do it after the incident at Club Zodiac where he found out that the chubby girl at the club was actually Miyabi. After the Shadow compliments the girl by telling her "You're my brown-eyed girl now!", Eikichi heard this and yelled at the Shadow to get his "paws" off of her, leading to a fight. Scorpio Temple
Shadow Lisa
Shadow Ginko After the three Shadows escaped, four temples appeared along the city: Leo Temple, Aquarius Temple, Taurus Temple, and Scorpio Temple. Shadow Lisa was at the end of the Taurus Temple protecting the crystal skull of said temple. When Tatsuya and the others arrive to where Shadow Lisa is, she greets them and instantly starts to taunt Lisa about how much weight she took off her chest after she admitted that she didn't know English. Lisa didn't deny it but the Shadow started revealing Lisa's drug use and compensated dating with older men. Taurus Temple
Shadow Tatsuya
Shadow Tatsuya After the three Shadows escaped, four temples appeared along the city: Leo Temple, Aquarius Temple, Taurus Temple and Scorpio Temple. Shadow Tatsuya was at the end of the Leo Temple protecting the crystal skull of said temple. When Tatsuya and the others arrive to where Shadow Tatsuya is, the latter taunts Tatsuya by saying that he knows his dreams (said dreams depends on what the player chooses at the beginning of the game during Saeko Takami's counseling). He tries to trick Tatsuya into admitting that he hates Jun for what he did when he was Joker, depending on the player's choice, the Shadow will make another remark about that Tatsuya must hate Jun, all the trouble he caused to the city and the pain he brought to his friends and him. Whatever the player chooses, the scene will lead to a boss fight against Shadow Tatsuya. Leo Temple
Metal Daddy
Metal Daddy While advancing inside Xibalba, where thoughts become reality, a metallic Kankichi emerges from Eikichi's fear for his father and challenges the player in a boss battle. After the fight, Eikichi bluffs and claims he's overcome his patriphobia, while the rest just shrugs. A shadow Kankichi in leather/rubber tights forms the right leg of the Great Father and shouts "Do as I say!" at Eikichi while attacking. Its signature move "Master 18" directly refers to the rumor of his martial arts capability. Xibalba
Metal Mama
Metal Mama Junko appears indirectly as the enemy Metal Mama in Xibalba as a manifestation of Jun's anxiety. Metal Mama claims Jun and Akinari were burdens, and her life would be better if Jun was never born, and that as his mother, she can do whatever she wants to him. Xibalba
Bolontiku
Bolontiku The Bolontiku appear deep in Xibalba and are fought before the party reaches the Fuhrer at its heart. Each of them have similar weaknesses to of the party's Ultimate Personas, as well as the dark version of their exclusive skills. Xibalba
Fuhrer
Fuhrer The infamous German dictator that took power in 1932. When Akinari Kashihara's book is leaked to Maya Amano's publishing company, the Fuhrer and his forces are resurrected by the rumors that result. According to the rumor, he did not commit suicide in 1945, but was saved by his elite soldiers, the Last Battalion, and he's still alive, waiting to come back to power. He wants to raise Xibalba so that he can create the perfect Dictator-State in Sumaru City. He's also Nyarlathotep in disguise; Nyarlathotep took the form of the evil that people commit in groups, not just an individual Shadow. Collective Unconsciousness
Great Father
Great Father He serves as the game's final boss in the form of the Great Father, a fusion of the main cast's fathers. The Great Father's arms and legs are each a particular character's father; Lisa Silverman's father (Steven Silverman) is the left arm, Maya Amano's (Masataka Amano) is the right arm, Eikichi Mishina's (Kankichi Mishina) is the left leg, and Jun Kurosu's Akinari Kashihara is the right leg. The head takes the shape of a fake Akinari Kashihara based on Jun's delusions. Collective Unconsciousness

Persona: Tsumi to Batsu (2000)
A spinoff manga of Persona 2 written by Naotsugu Matsueda. This manga takes place in the same school as the Persona 2 games. The next day, reminded of his dream, he suggests a masquerade ball for his class' contribution to the Seven Sisters High School school festival. Because of this, he and his long-time friend Rihito Shimizu are tasked with finding masks for the ball and in searching for them, encounter Igor acting as the proprietor of a mask shop. However, as they return from the shop, Rihito suddenly vanishes.
Persona 2 Tsumi: Lost Memories (2007)
RPG developed by Atlus and BBMF for mobile phones. Everyone has a "Shadow Self," the part of themselves they don't want to be. They also have an "Ideal Self," the person they aspire to be. Tatsuya, Jun, Lisa, and Eikichi's Shadow Selves objected and tried to convince them that resetting the world was the wrong thing to do, and that they needed to accept reality. They had to kill their Shadow Selves before they could advance to the spirit of Longinus, kill him, and reset the world. They were able to defeat their Shadow Selves and defeat the spirit of Longinus only with the help of their Ideal Selves.

Creation & Development[]

Development of Innocent Sin began after the release and success of Persona. The main staff from the previous game returned, including Kouji Okada (who acted as producer), designer Kazuma Kaneko, and writer Tadashi Satomi. From a technical standpoint, the game not only changed to an overhead view from the first Persona's mixture of overhead and first-person navigation, but also made improvements to elements that were criticized in Persona, such as load times and save point frequency. To separate the Persona series from the Megami Tensei series, the first game's banner title Megami Ibunroku was dropped. The theme of Innocent Sin, as with the previous entry, was exploration of the human psyche and the main characters discovering their true selves. The central character theme of Innocent Sin was the growth of teenagers and how they overcome their personal troubles. Another key element was the "power of Kotodama", the Japanese belief that words can influence the physical and spiritual world, with this power manifesting in the world of Persona 2 through the spreading of rumors. Terms and concepts used in the games, including Persona, Shadows and the character Philemon, were drawn from Jungian psychology and archetypes. The character of Nyarlathotep, who had made a cameo appearance as a Persona in the original game, was inspired by the character of the same name from H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Other antagonists and enemy creatures in the games were also drawn from the Cthulhu Mythos and played a key role in the narrative.

Iconography[]

Persona 2: Innocent Sin's main distinctive color was given to it years after the original release. The original cover and logo design are a light lavender color, but promotional material, cover art, and anniversary art will all use a red-orange color to distinguish Innocent Sin in the future. Red is the game's primary color in the PlayStation Portable remaster, likely based off of Apollo, Tatsuya Suou's Ultimate Persona, which also appears as the mascot of the game.

Common icons used to represent Persona 2: Innocent Sin vary more than some of the other games. A butterfly is often used, however in recent years that has moreso become iconic to Persona 1. The Seven Sisters High School emblem is prominent, as well as Tatsuya's lighter, a pile of blood, and the Japanese character for "Sin" (罪, Tsumi) as well.

Trivia[]

  • The PS1 version of Persona 2: Innocent Sin has never been officially released for North America or Europe for unknown reasons, though it is widely speculated that the appearance of Adolf Hitler as an antagonist, the use of Nazi iconography, and the potential homosexual relationship between protagonist Tatsuya Suou and fellow party member Jun Kurosu prevented the game from being greenlit for localization upon the game's initial release.
    • In an interview with GameInformer, Gail Salamanca, a member of Atlus USA's localization team, mentions another possible reason for a lack of localization was simply due to the developers not having the resources, manpower, or being able to schedule the time to localize the game for an American audience, with the team already having been underway with development of Eternal Punishment, and adds that "...We pretty much had to let it go. Though it wasn't for the lack of b--ching and moaning by the US staff", likely referring to the aforementioned issues.
    • Despite this, the game received a fan translation patch for use with PS1 emulators, giving the game English text, but leaving the Japanese voice acting intact. Atlus became aware of the fan patch early on in its creation and has made no attempts to halt its development or distribution.
  • In both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment, the game's developers make frequent cameos.
  • The PSP remake of Innocent Sin is the first Megami Tensei game to have its European release announced before the North American release.
  • Persona 2 is the only game in the Persona franchise that does not have an official manga adaptation. However there is a spin off manga and several fan-made manga anthologies (Only one of these anthologies ‘Persona 2: Tsumi Comic Anthology’ at this time has been fully fan translated but the rest remain unscanned/untranslated)
  • Released alongside the sequel Eternal Punishment, a bonus CD revealed a trailer for an anime called Persona 2: Another Self. It was planned to be an ova/anime series retelling both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment, but the production was cancelled for unknown reasons.

Continuity[]

  • Many characters return from the previous game including Yukino Mayuzumi, who becomes a major party member. The rest of the Megami Ibunroku Persona cast also appears in this game, save for Mark, Ayase, and Naoya, however Naoya would make a cameo in Eternal Punishment.
    • It is explained that the reason why Yukino uses her initial Personas in this game, as opposed to keeping her Ultimate from the last game, is that Personas are like muscles, you can train them all you want but if they go out of use they will go back to the way they were before. Assuming she hasn't used her Persona in years, it explains why she can only use Vesta.
  • Other characters from Megami Ibunroku Persona also appear, including Ms. Saeko and Principle Hanya, who both transferred to Seven Sister's High School from St. Hermelin's.
    • At some point in the game, Yukino references the Snow Queen Quest which involved Ms. Saeko.
    • Nyarlathotep and Philemon also make their return, both of them being much more prominent characters this time around. Their origins are revealed, as they are both beings that formed at the beginning of human consciousness. During the beginning, they made a bet with each other on whether or not the human race was inherently good or bad. Nyarlathotep defied the rules by interfering in the afairs of man, but even so was ultimately proven wrong by the forces of Tatsuya and his friends.
  • There is a stone monument in the courtyard at Sevens that has the same name as the one at St. Hermelin's.
  • Persona 2: Innocent Sin was referenced in Persona 3. The game's subtitle serves as the title for a popular fictional MMORPG in the the English version of Persona 3, "Innocent Sin Online". During the course of the game, the protagonist has the opportunity to play the game on Sundays and on holidays as a requirement for the Hermit Social Link. In Persona 3 Portable the MMORPG "Innocent Sin Online" and consequently the Social Link from it can only be initiated if the male protagonist is chosen. In addition, the protagonist's character in "Innocent Sin Online" is called Tatsuya and the person representing the Hermit Social Link (who the protagonist interacts with in the MMORPG) uses the handle Maya.
  • Students from Karukozaka High School, the school where Shin Megami Tensei: If... takes place appear as NPCs in Sumuru City.
    • In the PSP remaster, a new character from this school named Tamaizu Nirasawa from the Climax Theater story "Persona Thief" appears.
