“That is the memory you lost... Long ago, Bellum attacked you, stealing your power and memories... Now, those memories have surfaced. You have them back!”

— Ciela when Oshus gets his memories back

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is the fourteenth installment in the The Legend of Zelda series, released in 2007 for the Nintendo DS. It is preceded by Twilight Princess and succeeded by Spirit Tracks. The Hero of Winds is the main protagonist and Bellum is the main antagonist. The Ocean King's Water's monsters are the villainous faction.

It is the fourteenth game in the series, and the second in the Adult Timeline, a direct sequel to Wind Waker, set soon after. It follows Link and Tetra and their crew, having come in contact with the Ghost Ship, and getting lost in the Ocean King's Waters. Link is joined by Linebeck and Ceila as they try to save Tetra from the Ghost Ship.

Chronologically this game takes place between The Wind Waker and Spirit Tracks.

Synopsis[]

Set sometime after the events of The Wind Waker, Link and his gang of pirates are exploring the Great Sea looking for the legendary Ghost Ship. They finally find it, and Tetra tries to climb aboard, but she goes missing. Link tries going after her but falls in the water... He later wakes up on an unknown island and it's revealed that he is now in the Ocean King's Waters. In order to find his way home, he uses the Phantom Hourglass to traverse the Temple of the Ocean King and save Tetra. He discovers that the evil demon Bellum has been syphoning off power from the Ocean King, and Link stops him for good, saving Tetra and the Ocean King's Waters. Tetra and Link go back to their crew as they try to discover new lands.

Summary[]

Set some time after The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass opens with Tetra and her pirate crew along with Link chasing down a ghost ship claimed to have taken sailors and residents of the local islands. The crew discovers the ship, but when Tetra goes aboard to explore, she disappears. Link attempts to follow her but ends up adrift in the ocean.

Link later recovers through the help of the fairy Ciela, who has some amnesia about her past, and an old man named Oshus, who help Link on his quest to find the ghost ship and reunite with Tetra. To that end, they enlist the help of the reluctant Captain Linebeck and his ship after saving him from the Temple of the Ocean King; Linebeck only offers to help with the expectation of finding treasure along the way. Link discovers that to learn of the ghost ship's position, they must find the Spirits of Courage, Wisdom, and Power, using maps and clues hidden in the Temple of the Ocean King. However, to overcome the evil forces in the Temple, Link must make use of the Sands of Hours within the Phantom Hourglass and possessed by other creatures around the islands to prevent his life force from being drained. With the aid of the Hourglass, Link is able to locate and ally with the Spirits of Wisdom and Power easily, but the Spirit of Courage he finds looks exactly like Ciela. Oshus explains that Ciela is actually the Spirit of Courage and she lost her memory when Bellum attacked her. He also reveals that he himself is the Ocean King. Oshus further explains that he and Ciela had to take their present forms to hide from the life-eating monster Bellum, who is the cause of the ghost ship and other evil in the local area, and has taken residence at the very depths of the Temple. Link succeeds in his attempt to rescue Tetra with the help of the three Spirits, but finds Tetra is now a statue, a further effect of Bellum's life-draining power. Link is ready to continue but Linebeck initially refuses to help further having come up empty-handed for treasure so far, though agrees to continue once Oshus promises to grant Linebeck one wish after Link's quest is complete.

Link learns that the only way to defeat Bellum is to forge the Phantom Sword from three unique, pure metals around the local islands. After collecting the materials and forging the Phantom Sword, Link descends to the bottom level of the Temple, and initially appears to defeat Bellum. Tetra is freed from the statue form and revived, but before the group can celebrate, Bellum reemerges from the ocean depths and takes Tetra again. In the ensuing battle of the SS Linebeck and the ghost ship, Linebeck's ship is lost, as well as Oshus, and Link and Tetra are captured. Linebeck reluctantly picks up the Phantom Sword and is able to free Link and Tetra, at the cost of his own freedom, but is able to give Link back the Phantom Sword before Bellum possesses Linebeck and turns him into a Phantom-like knight, but Link is ultimately able to vanquish Bellum without harming Linebeck.

As the adventure closes, the sand from the Phantom Hourglass is released into the sea. Oshus, now in his true form of a gray, blue, and white whale, readies to depart with the Spirits, while Linebeck, surprising everyone, wishes not for treasure but for his ship back. After everyone says their goodbyes, Link and Tetra find themselves back on the pirate ship, where it seems only ten minutes have passed for the rest of the crew and they insist that it was all a dream. However, Link still possesses the now-empty Hourglass, and spies Linebeck's ship on the horizon, knowing full well that his adventure was real.

Characters[]

Bosses[]

Image Enemy Description Dungeon
Blaaz
Blaaz, Master of Fire When the battle starts, Blaaz splits into three smaller duplicates, all of which are impervious to Sword slashes. These duplicates float around Link, not separating too far from each other as they attempt to surround the hero on all sides. Eventually, all three will charge up a ball of Fire, unleashing it upon Link. The projectile's charge time takes several seconds and travels in straight lines. Their individual attacks can be interrupted mid-charge with a Boomerang attack. Although the three monsters appear identical, the icons representing them on the map have different number of horns. By drawing a path for the Boomerang and striking the enemies in ascending order, the monsters will combine into their true form. Otherwise, they will begin to combine, but halt halfway through.

Cyclok
Cyclok, Stirrer of Winds As Link climbs to the top of the Temple of Wind, strong gusts from an unknown origin delay his progress. At his destination, the door shuts behind him, and a flying Octorok-like monster riding a tornado descends to fight. The monster is the boss, which appears to face the Hero.

Crayk
Crayk, Bane of Courage When the battle starts, it turns invisible, but on the top screen, the room is shown from Crayk's viewpoint (presumably because of the second half of the Spirit of Courage it is guarding). When the top screen shows it charging at Link, the young hero must fire off an Arrow, (on the top screen, the player can see Link aiming at themselves) and it will withdraw into its shell. If Link fails to fire an arrow at it, Crayk will grab him, and Link must move the stylus back and forth in order to break free. When in its shell, Link can throw Bombs at it. Link can also use his Sword or Arrows to break the purple orbs surrounding its shell. Slashing it is easier, but more risky. Once every purple orb has been destroyed, Crayk's shell will fall off, leaving its tail vulnerable. The young hero must then fire arrows at Crayk to stun it and then slice its tail.

Cubus Sisters
Diabolical Cubus Sisters The Cubus Sisters appear as four young human girls, identical in appearance but dressed in differing colors, who are encountered on the Ghost Ship. Link finds the sister in red cowering in a corner on the first floor while a group of Poes haunt the area. Once the Poes are defeated, she introduces herself to Link as the youngest daughter of the House of Cubus, having been kidnapped along with her three older sisters and held captive on the Ship. She somehow has knowledge of Link's name and his quest to rescue Tetra, and seems relieved that a hero has arrived to save her sisters as well.

Dongorongo
Dongorongo, Armored Lizard In the first phase of the battle, Link's path is blocked by a strip of quicksand that prevents him from crossing. However, Gongoron comes out of a hole in the wall behind Dongorongo and offers help to Link. The objective is to dodge the fireballs that Dongorongo blasts from its mouth and to avoid it when it charges at Gongoron. If the young Goron dodges the charge attack, Dongorongo will bash its head against the wall, briefly stunning it. When this happens, Gongoron can slam it onto its side to further stun it, which can be done by either tapping the boss's back rapidly, or by simply rolling Gongoron around to Dongorongo's side. During this Critical Point, Link must send a Bombchu into Dongorongo's mouth to damage it. Link must occasionally take control of himself during the battle, as Eye Slugs will spawn throughout the battle and attempt to attack him.

Gleeok PH
Gleeok, Two-Headed Dragon Link will be standing on a platform with four pegs near each corner. When one of the heads fires a blast at Link, he will need to attach the grappling hook to two pegs diagonally so as the rope launches the blast back at the other dragon's face, cracking its mask. In addition with these blasts, the two heads will lunge to snap the rope Link ties, while trying to bite him as well. They can also sink below the water to cause a tremor that will flood Link's platform, as well as cause chunks of ice to fall from the ceiling and crash into Link. Link can tie the grappling hook to two posts and walk along the rope to avoid the ice chunks. Three blasts to both heads will remove their masks.

Eox
Eox, Ancient Stone Soldier Eox starts out as a giant golem that takes up both screens. In the first phase of the battle, Link must run around the arena dodging Eox's flurry of Arrows and fists. He must then head to one of four pedestals that spring him into the air when he hits it with the Hammer. Once in the air, Link must use the Hammer to hit the pegs that stick out of Eox's body. Repeating this will eventually shatter the stone outer body and reveal the wood frame underneath, where four buttons that light up where the previous pegs were are revealed. Link must then hit another spring to bounce into the air and hit all four buttons in one leap, collapsing Eox and begining the second phase of the battle.

Bellum
Bellum, Evil Phantom Oshus reveals that the only way to slay Bellum is with the legendary Phantom Sword, a sword which only the blacksmith Zauz knows how to forge. After many struggles, Link obtains the Crimsonine Steel, the Azurine Steel, and the Aquanine Steel needed to forge the Phantom Sword. He then finally penetrates the inner sanctums of the Temple of the Ocean King, where Bellum dwells, and uses the power of the Phantom Sword, the Phantom Hourglass, and the Ciela-made Phantom Spheres to temporarily defeat it. However, Bellum soon takes a revived Tetra and takes control of the Ghost Ship, attempting to escape with her. With the combined efforts of both Link and Linebeck, however, the Ghost Ship is destroyed. Bellum, still relentless, causes a large piece of the Ghost Ship to crash into the boat. Oshus, who was still on it, is seemingly killed, and Bellum uses this as an opportunity to grab Link. Linebeck, however, manages to free him using the Phantom Blade, but is soon taken by Bellum instead.

Ghost Ship
Ghost Ship After Bellum is defeated within the Temple of the Ocean King, he takes Tetra again and takes control of Bellum's Ghost Ship. Here, Link sails alongside it, launching Bombs at Bellum's eyes. Eventually, it sinks, and the final boss battle takes place on its remains. After the game's credits, Link and Tetra awaken on the mysteriously repaired Bellum's Ghost Ship. They go back onto their own ship, and Bellum's Ghost Ship soon disappears without a trace.

Bellumbeck
Bellumbeck In a last-ditch effort to defeat Link, Bellum takes control of Linebeck, transforming him into an immense Phantom, Bellumbeck. He then attacks Link, whose attacks are initially useless against Bellumbeck, even with the Phantom Hourglass. Ciela, however, hovers behind Bellumbeck, allowing Link to know when Bellumbeck's weak point, his eye, is open. Bellumbeck uses one of his tentacles to trap Ciela, though, and continues fighting Link. Link manages to loosen Bellumbeck's grip on Ciela several times throughout the battle, giving him Phantom Spheres to freeze time once Bellumbeck's eye is open. After a long and difficult battle, Linebeck is freed from Bellum's clutches, and the beast turns to the last of the Sand of Hours. Link absorbs it with the Phantom Sword, and Bellum is defeated.

  • The concept of customizing the ship with the Ship Parts inspired the customization of the train in Spirit Tracks with the Train Cars, as well as the upgrade of items and potions in Skyward Sword.
  • It is the first game in the series with a real-time item selection, which is carried over in Skyward Sword.
  • Phantom Hourglass is the first game in the Zelda series that does not include any new tools; all the items have been featured in previous Zelda games.

Continuity[]

  • The game is set after the events of The Wind Waker, which makes it the second confirmed entry in the Adult Timeline. It is followed 100 years later by Spirit Tracks, which is situated in a new land that was discovered eventually by Link, Tetra and her pirate crew.
