Plot Summary[]
After Garmadon's sacrifice to stop Chen and the Anacondrai Cultists, Lloyd is faced with the loss of his father and he is deeply saddened by it. This leads to him being tricked by Morro, and letting the ghost possess his body. Morro, also the Elemental Master of Wind, and a former student of Sensei Wu, was released from the Cursed Realm after Garmadon opened the portal. He then sought out to find Lloyd, and later, Sensei Wu's Staff. Morro was trained to be the Green Ninja, so logically, he possessed Lloyd to become the Green Ninja himself. He also needed to find the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master, and only a Spinjitzu Master is capable of finding the Tomb. The Ninja must stop him from finding the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master and cursing the Sixteen Realms by releasing his master, the Preeminent, and must also free their friend from the possession of Morro. They will also need to learn a new fighting style, Airjitzu, along the way.
The Ninja become stronger as they find new friends, face their fears, and find secrets that have been hidden. The Ninja also face many new adventures while Lloyd is possessed. They uncover the three secrets of Airjitzu, retrieve the Sword of Sanctuary, and locate the First Spinjitzu's Master's tomb, while persevering through many challenges and tests.
Sensei Wu reveals that Nya can have the control over the element of Water as her mother did. She joins the ninja and unlocks her True Potential to save Ninjago from being destroyed by the Preeminent by using a massive wave to drown it.
Kai and Nya are seen training when a teapot of Traveler's Tea appears as well as a mysterious egg. Kai then drops the egg and it hatches into Bandit. Then Clouse is seen in a shadowy temple and has somehow escaped the Cursed Realm, and is planning to plunge Ninjago into darkness by using Bandit, a young YinYang Dragon to complete a spell. Clouse tasked his Shadow Minions to capture Bandit. Kai and Nya are seen following Bandit when the Destiny’s Bounty appears and they board it. Lloyd, Cole, Zane, and Jay then appear. Zane tells them it is a YinYang Dragon.
The ninja take out their Elemental Blades as the Shadow Minions start attacking. The Shadow Minions take Bandit away, so Nya suggests that they jump off the bounty. Kai asked someone from the audience if they have a parachute underneath their sun hat, then blames that person for making them jump off the bounty, then Kai and Nya jump off of the ship and fall through some kind of rift into the Realm of Shadows. They find a trail of Bandit’s shed scales and follow it, also deducing it is Clouse behind all of it. They find the trail ends at the shadowy temple, and press down on three pressure locks and it opens the door, releasing a flood of water which Nya directs away from them. They hear the ceremony starting and they run into the temple. As Clouse starts the ceremony, they try to free Bandit but he refuses because he was turning into a Shadow Dragon. They fight off some Shadow Minions and encourage Bandit enough that he turns into a Light Dragon. The temple turns to crystal and Clouse runs off. Bandit starts flying around and the rest of the ninja appear. They find out the Traveler's Tea was destroyed and are stranded there. They then realize if they all combine their Spinjitzu, they will return home. They combine their Spinjitzu and then return home as planned.

Notes[]
- This is the first season to:
- Not to include any references to the Great Devourer.
- Not have Serpentine since their debut in Season 1. Episode 14-19 of Season 2 revolved around the Serpentine and Lord Garmadon being their leader, the ninja cross paths with Skales and his family in Season 3, and Arcturus and the other Anacondrai warriors appeared in the very last episode of Season 4 after Garmadon's sacrifice.
- Feature Airjitzu, as well as introducing Nya into the role of the Elemental Master of Water.
- To have the ninja learn a martial art related to Spinjitzu, in this case, Airjitzu.
- To cross over with another LEGO show, Legends of Chima.
- Introduce Ronin into the series, after first being introduced in the non-canon video game LEGO Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin.
- This season has the highest kill count of any season to date. The Preeminent, Morro, the Ghost Warriors, Garmadon, Chen, and the Anacondrai Cultists all die in "Curseworld, Part II." Cole and Clouse additionally become ghosts in this season.
- The season reveals Kai has a fear of water (but he does not in Season 2), Jay has a fear of attics, Zane has a fear of Morro, and Cole has a fear of becoming a ghost (which he later on succumbs to).
- This is the only season to feature the Cursed Realm besides Season 11.
- The Realm of Shadows show was confirmed by Dan and Kevin Hageman on Twitter to be canon with the TV show.
- Despite this, there are some inconsistencies with the TV show:
- Zane does not appear in his titanium form.
- Cole does not appear as a ghost.
- The ninja used Spinjitzu to return to Ninjago. It is unknown how they used the Tornado of Creation since the Golden Weapons were still in the Golden Armor until Season 10.
- Clouse still has the Book of Spells, despite it being burned already in "The Corridor of Elders."
- Tommy Andreasen said the play is "Canon-Ish" and that fans should "Only really trust the TV show." He also said "It works-ish" and is "Kind of" canon.
- Despite this, there are some inconsistencies with the TV show:
- The ninja wear their Honor robes in the 11th episode despite the play debuting over a year before "Day of the Departed."
- Tommy Andreasen explained, "The suits were designed as a 'greatest hits' version. The story takes place before Dark Island and DotD."
- An advertisement for the Possession referred to Realm of Shadows as "THE SPECIAL 11TH EPISODE" and "THE LOST STORY."
- In the second episode, Morro uses the power of lightning somehow.
- This may be a call back to when Jay uses the power of "Wind" during an episode of Season 1.
- Season 5 is titled Ghost Ninja (ゴーストニンジャ編) in Japan.
Continuity[]
- The Cursed Realm, which is mentioned in the previous season, is shown off in full.
- The 16 Realms are also introduced formally, however several of the other realms have been previously known to us before knowing they existed on different plains (those being the Underworld, Realm of Madness, and the Cursed Realm.)
- Garmadon officially dies for the first time in this season, as he perished inside of the Cursed Realm along with the rest of the ghosts and Chen.
- The Ninja's future reflections are shown off, showing that Kai, Zane, Jay, and Nya go on to live into adulthood and that Jay and Nya get together at some point.
- Cole's reflection is left ambiguous. It is possibly retconned in Season 6 that he sees no reflection because of his invisibility power he gains later, but because of the frequent trope of Cole and near-death falls, it's possible that is not the case anymore.
- Jay's future reflection shows him wearing an eyepatch, foreshadowing his involvement with the Sky Pirates in the following season.
- Jay does wear an eyepatch in the same spot in the next season, however the events are erased from the timeline and he no longer needs to wear it.
- Morro is revealed to be Wu's first student, and that he was originally thought to be the Green Ninja. We are shown in flashbacks that he went through the same ritual that the other Ninja did to decide if it was true.
- There is a continuity error in this flashback, as the Fire Sword shown in Morro's possession resembles just a regular golden katana. It is confirmed from the creators that this is an animation error.
- Yang's Haunted Temple is shown for the first time here. It is established through the context of the season that Yang and his students are not the same as the cursed ghosts from the Cursed Realm, as they are not bound to the Preeminant.
- It is also in this season that Cole turns into a ghost.
- Airjitzu, a second martial art similar to Spinjitzu, is introduced. This ability gives the Ninja the power of flight.
- Clouse somehow escapes the Cursed Realm and is able to wander Ninjago as a ghost. The first thing he does when he escapes is try to raise the YinYang Dragon into a Shadow Dragon to plunge Ninjago into shadows. This results in failure, and Clouse gets away once again, able to roam Ninjago as a ghost.
- Nya is revealed to be the Master of Water in this season, inheriting that Elemental Power from her mother Maya. This was foreshadowed in the previous season when Ray and Maya are shown in flashbacks during the Serpentine War using their respective Elemental Powers.
- Nya unlocks her true potential in the final episode, in a similar vein as when the original four Ninja did in Season 1.
- When Lloyd is under the possession of Morro, the original four Ninja's Elemental Powers no longer work. This is because of their lingering connection to Lloyd's Energy power, which dwindles as the series goes on.
- The character Ronin is introduced this season, having first appeared in the non-canon videogame, The Shadow of Ronin. It is suggested when the Ninja first encounter him that they have met before, and Ronin "left them in the mouth of a..." It is unclear what this scenario could be referring to, but it is assumed that it may be the events of the videogame.
- In Way of the Departed it is revealed that the Ninja's first encounter with Ronin occurred before Rebooted, meaning it could not be the event of TSoR.
- The Realm of the Wildness makes its first appearance this season, although it goes unnamed for nine years, while Morro and Lloyd fight while changing realms. They end up in Chima, which is revealed in Dragons Rising to be a region of this realm.
