— In-game monologue

Shin Megami Tensei II is the second installment in the Shin Megami Tensei series. The main protagonist is Aleph and the main antagonist is The Center. The Ring of Gaea and the Order of Messiah are this game's villainous factions.

It is the direct sequel to the grandfather of the entire Shin Megami Tensei franchise which in turn spawned the Persona series, as well as others like Devil Survivors, Soul Hackers, and more. It is the only numbered game in the SMT series to directly follow up on the one before it. It was made with Law in mind.

Shin Megami Tensei II was originally released in Japan on the SuperFamicon on March 18, 1994. It was later ported to many different consoles. To date it is the only Shin Megami Tensei game to be officially localized in the United States.

In 2002, SMT II received a remake the original PlayStation featuring updated graphics and music.

In 2003, SMT II received another remake on the GBA with updated graphics. This version was used as the base for the iOS port released in 2012.

It is preceded by Shin Megami Tensei and followed by Shin Megami Tensei: If...

Super Famicon[]

The TOKYO Millennium sought a Messiah... Decades after the Great Cataclysm... Plowing the wilderness, fighting hordes of demons, over countless lives and deaths, humanity survived... But humankind is not strong enough to live without something to rely on, without anything to cling to, so they hoped for a better tomorrow... Messianism preached the advent of the Messiah, those who believed gathered and a city was built... In a place once called the Cathedral... The year is 20XX, thus Tokyo has become the TOKYO Millennium.

Summary[]

'The Great Cataclysm of Tokyo' - Thorman presses the button, launching nuclear warhead-tipped ICBMs at Tokyo. Global nuclear holocaust ensues. 'The Great Tokyo Flood' - After the rebuilding of Tokyo, a tectonic plate movement of massive proportions causes the ocean to rush into Tokyo and decimate the area around it. Even after the waters receded, the suburbs of Tokyo remained submerged. 'Establishment of a Communal Cooperative Society' - After the destruction of the Basilica, a free society and government is established which warmly welcomes anyone, be they Messian or Gaean alike.

'Rise of the Messian Church' - Through political maneuvers, the Messian Church takes over the government and converts it to a theocracy. 'Gaean Revolt' - Angry and opposed to the Messian rise to power, several groups of Gaeans start numerous riots, but they are all quickly quelled by the Temple Knights.

'Completion of the Center' - Using a huge amount of funding, a massive structure named "Center" is built on the former site of the Basilica. The plan to create a municipal government called "Millennium" is also announced. 'Demonoids developed' - In order to ensure a source of labor, artificial life forms called "Demonoids" are developed.

'Millenium nearly completed' - Facilities designed to accommodate the people like Valhalla and the Factory (a production/industrial area) are designed and nearly complete. Entertainment facilities like Casinos are also built. 'Environmental Contamination' - Through global warming, radioactive contamination, and the deterioration of the ozone layer, most of the world outside of Tokyo Millennium is rendered uninhabitable. Large numbers of people from around the world flock to Millennium, as its environment is entirely self-contained. 'Temple Knights become Special Police Forces' - After putting an end to several Gaean demonstrations and revolts, the Temple Knights are evaluated by the Center and are promoted to Elite status. They are declared the official police force of the city. Their increase in power tightens the control the Center has on the rest of the city even more.

'Present day, present time' - The megalopolis that was once called Tokyo...many are the names and the shapes that it took throughout its long history...but it survived. And even in this day, it lives on...as "Tokyo Millennium"; the city of the messiah faith. The faith which gathered under its wings the hearts and minds of millions who cry out for the advent of the Messiah. Back in the beginning, it was being built to turn the dream of the Thousand Year Kingdom into a reality, but neither God nor the Messiah appeared within its walls. And then, time went. And very soon, some of its citizens became much more equal than others...

One of the particularly prosperous districts of Millenium is the Valhalla Area, famous for the cruel sport of arena fighting, practiced there to this day. Men fight each other, risking their lives to thrill the blood-thirsty crowds. Recently, a new fighter named "Hawk" blazed onto the scene like a comet: the audience gapes at his prowess, the crowd goes wild over his unbroken string of victories, but no one knows who he is or where he came from...

He appears in his giant snake form during the boss fight. After he is defeated, he can be encountered in places such as the Center district as a regular demon in his human form. Factory

SMT2 PS Messiah Gimmel Sprite
Gimmel After this, his next appearance is much later in the game, on Aleph and Hiroko's first trip to the Abyss, where they experience a bizarre phenomenon: a "spacial distortion" of sorts teleports them into the innards of a mysterious building where, in separated chambers, they find people tied to metallic chairs, their brains plugged into computers. Further investigating the upper floors, they are shocked to discover that the one responsible for the disgusting state of those people was none other than Gimmel, the real Gimmel, as he reveals to them that the Arcadia that Aleph witnessed before was nothing more than the fabrication of virtual reality, and thus, not real, simply an illusion under his total control. Fake YHVH Being only the product of the Center's Elders distorted sense of faith, his powers were naturally inferior to the original's. Due to his relative weakness, he was destroyed along with the archangels by Aleph in an arduous battle, cursing his killers with all his might before finally disintegrating. Born of the Elder's memories of the real YHVH, his appearance is largely the same as the real YHVH too, only colored blue instead of golden and (in the SNES and PSX releases) wavering like mist. Astaroth Astaroth disguises himself as Lucifer's avatar, Louis Cyphre, and attacks Aleph at Briatic Passage. When defeated, he realizes Aleph's power as the Messiah and asks Aleph to return him to the form of Ishtar. This allows the player to fuse Astaroth. SMT2 PS Abaddon Sprite

Atavaka Atavaka is the leader of the Shinshou and is also found in the Geburah section of Makai along with the Shinshou. He was told by Lucifer to block the entrance to the Atziluth corridor, so he turned the town of Geburah into an iron fortress so that he and the Shinshou could test Aleph's power in battle. He is fought in his room after all of the twelve members of the Shinshou have been defeated. Geburah

SMT2 PS Satan Sprite

At the end of the conflict, those who survived were gathered as one within the Cathedral, and after many decades, what was once known as Tokyo came to be reinvented as "Tokyo Millennium".

Shin Megami Tensei II Side Story: Demon Metropolitan (2008)

By accessing treasure chests on each floor, players can acquire items to boost their abilities, restore their health, and do things like seal enemy demon movement. Combat is turn-based. Players can use weapons like swords for melee attacks, guns for ranged attacks, and magic for spell attacks. After completing the game, it is possible to use the reincarnate function to challenge dungeons again with the same level and equipment the player finished the game with.

Trivia[]

  • In a part of the game there's an NPC called Mr. Thriller dancing in a club with another bunch of undead demons (Bodyconians, zombies, Man Eaters, etc.). Mr. Thriller is a cameo of Michael Jackson, wearing the garments he used in his music video for his song Thriller.
  • A three-part non-serialized manga adaptation was released in ASCII Comics' monthly magazine, drawn by Chiaki Ogishima, who was publishing the Shin Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation manga around the same time.
  • The game was designed with "Law" as its theme, making the Law Ending the canonical ending of the game.

Continuity[]

  • Despite the original manual’s timeline claiming that The Great Tokyo Flood took place in 203X, a vision within the Akarana Corridor as a part of the final dungeon of Raidou Kuzunoha Vs. The Soulless Army would later suggest that the latter half of Shin Megami Tensei instead occurred during the 2020s.
  • Many demons from the previous game return after being defeated, including the heralds Uriel, Raphael, and Michael, as well as demons like Astaroth.
  • This game continues around 40 or 50 years after the first entry in the series after the Neutral Ending. Since then, Tokyo Millenium has been established, but the Order of Messiah and the Gaeans are still around.
    • Before the events of this game, the protagonist founded the Valhalla district of Tokyo Millennium. A statue of the protagonist of SMT I can be seen in the coliseum when you fight with Red Bear, where he is referred to as the "first champion."
      • In the Visionary cutscene titled "Golden Appleseed" present in the GameBoy Advance and iOS versions of the game, Madam meets Cerberus, who is mourning the loss of her master. Madam notes that her master in question was the Hero from Shin Megami Tensei, implying that Cerberus is actually the Hero's pet-turned-demon Pascal.
    • In the Temple of Chesed, you find the ghosts of Gotoh and Ozawa who mention the protagonist, although neither obviously have details about what happened post SMT I.
    • The remains of Tokyo are turned into the Underworld, a desolate ruined city that lies beneath Tokyo Millennium.
      • To the east of Old Shinjuku, an NPC marks the spot where three youths arrived in Tokyo from the Diamond Realm a long time ago, referencing the Hero, Law Hero, and Chaos Hero from Shin Megami Tensei. After defeating the final boss and reloading any save file, this same location can be used to enter the Diamond Realm, which acts as a hub area through which the party can enter multiple other dungeons originally from Shin Megami Tensei, including: Camp Ichigaya, Tokyo Tower, Imperial Palace, and Government Office.
  • Stephen makes another appearance in this game, the same Stephen as always because he is a multiversal constant across all Shin Megami Tensei games. He once again appears to the protagonist of this game, Aleph, inside the virtual training ground to introduce him to the Demon Summoning Program.
  • Lucifer also makes an appearance, and becomes intrigued by Aleph's ability to defy God, and wonders if he is the incarnation of Satan, the one who would judge them all. Lucifer then learns that Aleph is not Satan, despite that he could sense the imminent signs of Satan's coming. After YHVH is defeated, Lucifer congratulates Aleph for restoring the world to its natural order, thus allowing the Mutants to live on the surface once again.
  • Between games, Masakado's body was torn to six-pieces as he fell victim to the internal conflict between the Yamato gods. After Aleph gathers them and revives him, he is granted the Katana of Masakado, the same way he did the previous protagonist in SMT I.
  • Near the end of the game, Aleph encounters a wall with YHVH's face on it who gives you quiz questions. This is the same wall face that the hero sees in his dream in the beginning of the game.
    • He asks the question of if you would kill your mother if she was possessed by a demon, which references what happens in the beginning of the last game.
  • Ozawa, his thugs, and Gotou return in this game in the Corridor of Yetzirah. They are spirits who reside here, and make references to the events of the previous game.
