Summary[]
In post-apocalyptic Tokyo, Nanashi is killed by demons. In the afterlife, a demon named Dagda offers to resurrect him in exchange for his service as a Godslayer. Shortly afterward, Nanashi and his friend Asahi are manipulated into unsealing Krishna, a ruthless deity who intends to destroy the universe and create a new one free of YHVH's influence. Krishna takes Asahi hostage in order to force Flynn to surrender to him, intending to force Flynn to become his own Godslayer. He also unleashes the monstrous serpent Shesha to begin harvesting human souls for his plans. Nanashi and Asahi set out to defeat Krishna and Shesha.
The Divine Powers activate the Tokugawa Mandala, an ancient seal placed in Tokyo, which disables the Hunters' Demon Summoning Program and leaves them helpless; however, thanks to Dagda's power, Nanashi remains able to summon demons. The Divine Powers attack the humans' underground shelters and Asahi's father is killed. Nanashi and his companions break the Tokugawa Mandala, defeat Krishna and Shesha at his base in Tsukiji Konganji, and rescue Flynn. The party then sets out to defeat Merkabah and his angels, as well as Lucifer and his demons. Nanashi has the option of siding with Merkabah, Lucifer, or humanity. Supporting Merkabah will destroy Tokyo and transform Mikado into the new Kingdom of God, while supporting Lucifer will destroy Mikado and plunge the world into anarchy. Nanashi can lead humanity to victory if he kills both Lucifer and Merkabah in a massive three-way battle.
During the celebration afterwards, Flynn murders the surviving Demon Hunters. He reveals himself to be Shesha, reincarnated in Flynn's form, and explains that Krishna faked his own defeat to manipulate the Hunters into eliminating the angels and demons; the real Flynn remains in Krishna's clutches. Shesha murders Asahi and transforms into the Cosmic Egg, a giant object that will hatch into Krishna's new universe when the full moon rises. The party storms the Cosmic Egg to defeat Krishna and his Divine Powers once and for all. Inside the Egg, Dagda reveals his plan to hijack it and create his own universe where all humans are completely independent from one another, and demands Nanashi's aid in his plan. Dagda's mother Danu opposes him, and wants Nanashi to destroy the Egg.
- If Nanashi rebels against Dagda, Danu revives Dagda in line with their ideals, and Nanashi kills Dagda's dark side. The true Dagda then resurrects all of Shesha's victims, including Asahi. The group then kills Krishna, rescues Flynn, and destroys the heart of the egg. As the group begins to celebrate, Stephen appears and reveals that there is one more enemy standing between humanity and true freedom: YHVH, the creator god. Stephen opens a portal to YHVH's universe, and Nanashi and Flynn invade his realm. They undergo a trial from YHVH's second-in-command Satan, and are deemed worthy to confront YHVH. Satan temporarily resurrects Flynn's old friends Walter and Jonathan to aid them, and the group battles and destroys YHVH once and for all. Afterwards, humanity is finally freed from the gods and a new peace is forged by Tokyo, Mikado, and the demons.
- If Nanashi sides with Dagda, his friends turn against him, and he is forced to kill them all. Nanashi defeats and executes Krishna, and Flynn is killed in the battle. The Cosmic Egg hatches into Dagda's new universe, and he appoints Nanashi as its new Creator. Afterwards, Stephen appears and explains that the new universe cannot fully come to fruition until YHVH is killed and the old universe destroyed. Dagda resurrects Flynn and a companion of Nanashi's choice to be brainwashed into serving as his Godslayer and Goddess, respectively. After defeating the remaining Hunters, Nanashi invades YHVH's universe and kills him. The old universe dies and is reborn as a new universe where humans are free from all outside influence. Dagda fades away, leaving Nanashi to rule his new creation.

Trivia[]
- Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse contains various DLC. Following March 27, 2023 all DLC will be unable to purchase. Additionally, retailer exclusive preorder bonuses cannot be accessed without the use of modding or emulation.
- Nanashi is capable of choosing which seven different partners to join him in battle, with them each specializing in a different role. There is an assist gauge at the bottom of the screen which fills up one point at a time as the chosen partner acts. Certain responses to a boss's question will grant extra assist points, easily filling the gauge to maximum. When the gauge is full at eight bars, the enemy side's turn is interrupted, partners with healing or stat buff skills will act once and then a powerful joint attack on all enemies follows. Afterward, random party combatants are granted the Smirk status, and the gauge is depleted to be charged anew. Partners also use their own demons to help with combat.
- Certain skills have additional effects when the user is under the Smirk status. For example, Light and Dark spells now primarily inflict damage which are effective against bosses as well, but their instant death effect only activates during Smirk; "King Bufula," an all-enemy moderate ice attack which is exclusive to King Frost, will debuff defense in addition during Smirk.
- The negotiation system has been updated; A demon who has abandoned the previous negotiation will take up where the talk has left off if spoken to again, rather than merely starting the negotiation all over again.
- Demons may have special Skill Affinity stats, that boost the properties of specific skill types; demons using skills they specialize in will result in the skill dealing more damage or costing fewer MP; conversely, demons with bad affinity for skills will do less damage and consume more MP on use. Resulting enhancements or disadvantages on skills are similarly proportional to ranking up individual skills of the previous protagonist or Nanashi via Whisper event.
- Estoma now creates a barrier around Nanashi rather than being channeled into his blade. A shortcut to cast Estoma instantly was added to the bottom left of the lower screen.
- User interface has been enhanced completely:
- The ability to rearrange the skill order of both the protagonist and his demons was added to the Party menu.
- An icon has been added to denote if the enemy demon has been registered in the Demonic Compendium.
- A filter to define a range of result levels was added to the Fusion Search. (1~9, 10~19, etc.)
- Utilizing the Mapper on the bottom screen to navigate the map pauses the overworld, allowing map investigation without being interrupted by encounters.
- The next destination of the current main quest is denoted in the map with a red flag icon and can be centered on by the press of a button while using the Mapper.
- Ability to zoom in or out in the overworld map was added.
- Partners will recommend the player to persuade a demon who has not been registered yet, and comment on the overall party status occassionally (e.g. pointing out someone in the party is Sick or suffering from Poison).
- When obtaining a relic, its expected selling price is displayed (except Relics gained as Quest rewards).
- Demons making vocal noises while attacking or hurt (similar to Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne).
Continuity[]
- This game takes place in an alternate universe of the Neutral Ending of the previous game. Things begin to differ at the point where Flynn was originally going to awaken Masakado and remove the barrier above Tokyo, however in this timeline, Nanashi awakened the Divine Powers, who kidnap Flynn in order to defeat the "One True God" and save humanity.
- The game starts with a recap of the events of the last game, showing Flynn and the samurai in their battle against Merkabah and Lucifer. It tells of how it put an end to the Ashura-Kai and Ring of Gaea. The game picks up at the deciding moment where Flynn is on his way to defeat the angels of light and darkness.
- Nanashi's base is in the same city where Flynn originally awakened Masakado. The large stone he left behind can still be seen there.
- The introduction tells of the nuclear war that destroyed the world, and how Masakado and Flynn (who had been sent back in time in the previous game) created the firmament that currently stands to separate them from the rest of the world.
- Nikkari reveals that he had gone to the surface before, unknowing that it had become the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, protected by the angels.
- Skins and Fujiwara, the founders of the Hunters Association, are returning characters in this game. Flashbacks reveal what they were doing before the firmament went up.
- Akira is also mentioned in this flashback, and he is held in poor regard by the hunters of today due to the fact that he left Tokyo to become the King of Mikado.
- Flynn, Isabeau, and Navarre return from the previous game. Flynn is seen defeating Angels and Devils alike with the help of Isabeau, who is the Neutral Hero from his party in the previous game. At this point in the game, Walter and Jonathan have both succumbed to their respective sides.
- Since SMT IV, Navarre has passed away and become a wandering spirit, which only Nanashi can see, leading to them teaming up.
- When Asahi asks about a code name to register her Hunter Association name under, Nanashi can suggest "Pascal", to which Asahi says "doesn't that sound like a dogs name?" referencing the name of the SMT 1 protagonist's dog, which can later be fused into Cerberus.
- Nozomi is another character that returns from the previous game, she previously appeared in multiple side quests that are mandatory to win the Neutral Ending and was left at the end of IV as the inheritor of the Fairy Forest. She returns in this game with the Fairy's powers and joins the main cast as a party member.
- Steven returns in this game, last appearing in the previous game, once again on the side of neutrality.
- Jonathan and Walter return, as Lucifer and Merkabah in this game, as they have given up their human forms to turn into the leaders of the Angels and the Devils.
- Medusa is resurrected by the Divine Powers for a boss battle again.
- It's revealed in this game that Navarre has a younger brother named Gaston, who ends up working for Merkabah.
- Nanashi meets Tenkai, who was previously turned to stone after becoming an ally of Flynn. He makes reference to this when he is freed from stone, and agrees to help Nanashi free Flynn from the Divine Powers.
- What happened after the firmament went up is shown for the first time. Skins, Fujiwara, and Akira agreed to go their separate ways to bring humanity together, with Akira choosing a "neutral" path by forming the Kingdom of Mikado and the other two trying to get the humans to understand Demons in Tokyo.
- It is later revealed that Nanashi is the reincarnation of Akira, and that Flynn is the reincarnation of the boy who used Masakado to create the seal over Tokyo.
- Merkabah mentions the Millennial Kingdom in reference to what she wants her God to accomplish, which is a direct reference to the Millennial Kingdom created by YHVH's servants in Shin Megami Tensei II.
