“I wish you had taken my hand, (sobbing silently.) and no one ever found that teapot in the first place.”

— Jay's last wish, "The Way Back"

Skybound is the sixth season and the seventh installment of the Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu series. It was originally released on March 24th, 2016. Jay is the focus character for this season and Nadakhan is the main antagonist. The Sky Pirates serve as the villainous faction.

It is the fourth installment in the Master Trials arc. It focuses on Jay as he struggles to live in the present and be there for his friends. He overfocuses on his reflection he saw of Nya, and ultimately learns patience. A special minifigure was released for this season of Pirate Jay. The collectible weapons for this season are the Djinn Blades.

In 2016, a novel adapting the episode "Infamous" released titled Return of the Djinn written by Kate Howard.

It is preceded by Possession and followed by The Dark Island Trilogy.

Plot Summary[]

Clouse (the only escapee from the Cursed Realm), finds the Teapot of Tyrahn and frees the evil djinn, Nadakhan, from it. Nadakhan then traps Clouse in it by making him "wish it all away," which he would continue to do to characters throughout the season.

Nadakhan proceeds to frame the ninja and succeeds in making them wanted criminals. The ninja try to find Clouse in Stiix but are forced to flee because they are chased by the citizens, who are angry with them for destroying their town in the previous season. Misako pilots the Destiny's Bounty to get them but it ends up crashing down by the police. The ninja manages to split up and escape but Misako gets arrested.

Earlier that day, Nadakhan finds Sensei Wu in the Library of Domu and hears him saying, "Be careful what you wish for," and imprisons him in the Teapot of Tyrahn. When Misako is left in a room handcuffed, Nadakhan comes and tricks Misako into telling him the secret location of the Realm Crystal and also imprisons her in his teapot.

Ronin is then hired by the Police Commissioner to find the ninja and bring them to justice in exchange for a hefty sum of money and his criminal record being erased. While the ninja split up into three teams of two, Jay and Cole discover that Nadakhan could shapeshift, explaining how he framed them. After Ronin cunningly captures all of the ninja, they are brought to Kryptarium Prison. Meanwhile, Nadakhan goes to the location of the Realm Crystal in Hiroshi's Labyrinth Stronghold and steals it.

At Kryptarium Prison, the ninja find Captain Soto and he tells them how to catch a djinn, the answer being to use a drop of Tiger Widow venom to weaken Nadakhan. After freeing Soto and themselves, Captain Soto told them that the last Tiger Widow lived on an island not found on any map but in a lantern hidden on Misfortune's Keep.

Meanwhile, Nadakhan (who was once a pirate) freed his crew from different realms from which they were banished to.

The police were focused on finding the ninja but unknown to them, Nya and Jay were disguised as police officers and had logged in to the police system searching for Nadhakan's ship but unsuccessfully found nothing.

Meanwhile, Cole and Lloyd flew on their Elemental Dragons back to the last known location of Nadhakan's ship only to find electric wiring and other metal parts. Zane and Kai went to the crash site of the Destiny's Bounty only to find the need to escape, leaving their ship behind.

Meanwhile, Nadakhan and his crew visit to his home realm, Djinjago, but it was slowly falling apart. Nadhakan's father, the Djinn King, told Nadakhan that the Sixteen Realms were all interconnected. When the ninja destroyed the Cursed Realm, they also destroyed Djinjago. Nadhakan's father gave him the Djinn Blade, a sword that had the power to hold spirits. Nadhakan then slashed the Teapot of Tyrahn with it, causing the souls of Clouse, Master Wu, and Misako to transfer into the sword. He then returned to Ninjago and swore the ninja would pay for their actions.

However, the ninja learned much about the true enemy and got the only thing needed to stop him, though they were taken down by the Dijinn one by one. The pirates try to break Jay through different methods after capturing him to make him use his final wish but failed every time. Even after the rescue, both Jay and Nya were the only ones left and went into hiding in order to organize their plans, though Jay was shaken over the loss of their comrades. During their last confrontation, Jay was pushed into the portal made by Traveler's Tea and Nya was captured.

Jay gathers a team to help him to save his comrades, though he was unable to save Nya in time. Fortunately, Nya helped Jay to get the sword to save his friends and they crashed the wedding.

Jay manages to make a final wish that all of the events transpired should not happen in the first place, mourning over the loss of Nya. Due to the venom and the purity of the wish, Nadakhan gave Jay what he wants by reversing time and return back to the point where everything started. As both Jay and Nya realizes that they were the only ones who remembered the events, both of them embraced and rekindled their relationship, much to the others' confusion over what happened. The reunion of the Lightning and Water Ninja was broadcasted all over Ninjago by Dareth. At the same time, Clouse found the teapot, but this time got chased away by the citizens, which fortunately prevented the same events from happening again. At the same time, the Temple of Airjitzu was seen floating in the sky, marking a new future challenge against the ninja.

Notes[]

  • According to Tommy Andreasen:
    • This is the season where the Hageman Brothers worked the most independently. They have stated it is one of their favorite seasons, while it may be one of Andreasen's least favorite due to his minimal involvement.
    • The season "had very little concept work done before writing commenced."
  • Nadakhan's minifigure's tailpiece is a recolored version of the ghost tail, though in the series, his lower body appears as a column of orange smoke. The use of this piece is because LEGO wanted to keep using it since they'd already made the materials for the previous season, so the Hageman Brothers came up with the idea to use it for a djinn.
  • This is one of the few waves of sets that do not feature any sort of mech, for the ninja or the villain.
  • The order of the characters' appearances in the intro is based on the order of when they get trapped into the Djinn Blade. Nya and Jay are the only characters not to get trapped in the Djinn Blade.
  • This season's name is similar to that of Seabound, another season with a major focus on Nya.
  • This seasaon has a total of 6 spin-off episodes dedicated to it.
  • Season 6 is titled Pirates of the Sky (天空の海賊編) in Japan.

Continuity[]

  • Clouse returns in this season after evading capture at the end of Realm of Shadows. He is now looking for the Teapot of Tyrahnn, which he finds in the undone timeline and loses track of in the prime timeline.
  • Clancee, a Serpentine featured in this season, is said to not belong to any specific tribe as he is a hybrid of two, presumably one being a Hypnobrai.
  • Nadakhan was first defeated by Captain Soto and his crew. "Destiny's Bounty," and "Misfortune's Keep" both share a naming scheme because of this.
    • In the episode Misfortune Rising, one of the Ninjago City buildings claims to have just been repaired after the last pirate attack (in reference to the events of Pirates vs. Ninja,) and then are subsequently attacked by the Sky Pirates.
  • Kai is brought to the past by Nadakhan (or a vision of the past,) where he meets his father, Ray. This is before he had met his mother and was selling weapons for cheap.
  • Jay is revealed to have been adopted by Ed and Edna Walker, as he was left on their doorstep as a baby. His real father's name is Cliff Gordon, and his mother was the previous Elemental Master of Lightning.
    • It's worth noting that Nadakhan did not influence these events at all, he just made the truth to Jay clearer.
  • Jay dons his eyepatch in this season after having been previously foreshadowed when he was in the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master. After the events of this season are erased, he no longer needs to wear it.
    • Additionally, the matter of Cole lacking a reflection is addressed in this season, as Cole gains the ghostly power of turning invisible. Due to these events also being erased, it's possible Cole still believes his destiny is uncertain.
  • This season establishes that "sister realms" are a concept within the 16 realms, and because of the balance, if one realm falls, another must as well. This is evident in the destruction of the Cursed Realm causing the realm of Djinjago to collapse.
  • The end of the season shows a glimpse of the Temple of Airjitzu remaining floating in the air, even after the events of the season are undone. While the cause of this is unknown, it is meant to foreshadow the importance of this location in subsequent installments Day of the Departed and The Hands of Time.
    • Sensei Yang and his students are seen in this season during the erased events, as they are forced out of their temple to make way for Nadakhan's wedding.
  • The pirates of Misfortune's Keep are sent back to their original states, stranded between the 14 Realms.
    • Nadakhan is also returned to the Teapot of Tyrhann, which is lost in a scrapyard for the time being.
  • In the erased timeline the Realm Crystal is shattered. While this is not important in and of itself, it establishes that it can be destroyed in the first place.
  • The Realm Crystal, currently, is being held in Hiroshi's Labrynth, a location original featured in Rebooted.
  • Dr. Julien's lighthouse makes a reappearance in this season after being first seen in Season 2. While Dr. Julien has been deceased for about two years at this point, his creations still roam the building. It is revealed that he built a replica of Zane out of the scraps he had named Echo Zane.
  • It is later revealed in Dragons Rising that the realm of Djinjago itself is the source of a Djinn's Wish Magic, and without it, a Djinn is powerless. This somewhat adds more context to Nadakhan's plan to reconstruct Djinjago before he marries Nya, but it doesn't explain why he was able to use the full extent of his base powers with his realm completely destroyed.
    • It is possible that due to the fact that he is royalty he already possessed more power than the average Djinn, which let him hold onto his power for longer.
