“We took a sacred oath to keep the Storm Amulet safe from those who would seize it. We harnessed the power of lightning, and became one with the storm. Our forefathers kept the oath, and their forefathers, all the way back to the beginning.”

— Mammatus, "The Keepers of the Amulet"

The Island is the seventeenth installment in the LEGO Ninjago series. It was originally released on November 19th, 2021. Lloyd is the focus character of this season, and Chief Mammatus is the main antagonist. The Keepers of the Amulet serve as the villainous faction.

It is the fourth installment in the Book of Elements arc. Although not called this by the writers, this installment may make up for the Energy Chapter, and the villainous faction retellings are the Anacondrai Cultists in the Keepers of the Amulet. Lloyd is the focus character, as this season keeps track of his journey to rescue his mother from the Island of the Keepers. The collectible item for this season is the Storm Amulet.

It is preceded by Master of the Mountain and followed by Seabound.

Notes[]

  • This installment is often referred to by networks as the first part of Season 3 of the new LEGO Ninjago series.
  • The title cards in this installment depict debree washing up on a shore showing off a scene from the episode, with the title placed above it, made out to look like sticks placed on the beach.
  • According to Tommy Andreasen:
    • "It was fun making a small, contained Ninjago story" and The Island was inspired by the setting of King Kong films, the structure of Scooby-Doo, and the story idea of "The Monster of the Misty Lake" (from the Dutch comic series, Douwe Dabbert). A scene from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was also likely an inspiration.
      • The structural similarities with Scooby-Doo are as follows: a character or group is shown in the first scene to be attacked by a mysterious villainous force; the next scene has the main cast getting the call to adventure; eventually, it is revealed the monster was a costume or machine set up by an ordinary human who was hinted at earlier in the story in order to gain something they want. In the finale, Ronin even says a version of the well-known line from Scooby-Doo, "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids."
      • Zippy's movement is very similar to that of Scooby-Doo himself. Zippy's set designer, Jme Wheeler, had in mind a "big hyper dog" for the personality of Zippy.
  • Although Kirby Morrow unexpectedly passed away on November 18, 2020, he recorded Cole's lines for this season prior to his death. LEGO announced that the 2021 episodes will be dedicated in honor of him, which was confirmed at the beginning of the credits of "The Tooth of Wojira."
  • The Island is the first WildBrain installment where the Teapot of Tyrahn does not appear or is not even mentioned.
    • It was first seen in Season 11 inside the belly of Beohernie in "The Belly of the Beast."
    • In Season 12, Clutch Powers is seen holding it in the season premiere, "Would You Like to Enter Prime Empire?".
    • In Season 13, Lloyd asks whether or not the teapot has been located in the season premiere, "Shintaro."
  • This is the first installment since March of the Oni not to have The Weekend Whip featured in the intro.
  • Soundtrack titles from The Island are: Chop Chop!, Statuebro Terror, Uncharted, The Club Will Prevail, The Storm Belt, Twitchy Tim, Storms Monsters Doom, Leaded or Unleaded, Breaking Waves, Into the Fog, Catamaran Hand-Stand, Blue Sandy Beaches, Air Mail, They're Alive, Jungle Choppers Ride Out !, Island End Credits, Main Title, Poisonous Birds, How to Train Your Zippy, Statuebros, Rope-Bridges Always Break, A Shocking Entrance, The Keepers Arrive, Not My Style, Twitchy's Rule, Keepers of the Amulet, One With the Storm, Island Main Titles, All But One, Prison Reunion, Rambo Lloyd, Precious Little Gift, Game of Fetch, Gift of Jay, Wojira End Credits, Final Sacrifice, Wojira's Meal, It's a Con, All was Peaceful, Paying off Wojira, Cost Jay Everything, To Rescue a Friend, and Keeper's Brothers.
    • The title How to Train Your Zippy refers to the movie trilogy How to Train Your Dragon, as well as the title of the Hunted episode, "How to Build a Dragon."
    • The title Rambo Lloyd refers to the movie series Rambo.
    • Uncharted, Keepers of the Amulet and Gift of Jay are also the titles of the three episodes of The Island.
  • There is a running gag where Lloyd forgets to acknowledge Clutch Powers, in "The Keepers of the Amulet" and "The Tooth of Wojira."
  • This installment has a total of 4 spin-off episodes dedicated to it.
  • Amount of times a different character reads a title card:
    • Mammatus: 2
    • Wu: 1
    • Jay: 1

Continuity[]

  • Ronin makes his reappearance this season after being absent since Season 9. As per usual he's up to his old business.
  • Wu being with Misako and Clutch in the premiere episode was foreshadowed in the previous season when Wu declared that he wanted to go on another adventure (after the one he had in Shintaro.)
  • Fugi-Dove is confirmed to have been captured by Ronin in the first episode after having broken out of jail in the episode "Level Thirteen."
    • Curiously, he is not seen in the finale with the other inmates.
  • The storm spirit Wojira is officially revealed as a real creature that exists, after having been foreshadowed in Season 8 and Season 11.
  • It is revealed that the Keepers who inhabit the titular island were guardians of a sacred Storm Amulet. They were placed there by the First Spinjitzu Master to keep the amulet away from Wojira, who is said to have existed "long before Time had a name," (a reference to the iconic beginning prologue speech from Wu in Season 1.)
    • This is the first introduction to the Amulets of Wojira, with the Storm Amulet taking center focus in this season.
    • The Wave Amulet also appears on her head when Wojira is shown at the bottom of the sea in the finale episode.
      • This also sets up the next season, as it is revealed that it was placed there by Prince Kalmaar in an attempt to awaken it.
  • Jay remarks that his parents used to call him "their little gift," referencing the fact that he was literally dropped on their doorstep when he was a baby.
  • At the end of the installment Clutch Powers attempts to steal the Storm Amulet but is caught, and the amulet is returned to its shrine. It's revealed in the next season that this amulet is a fake, and he swapped it out for the real one before he was caught.
